compose music for film

Hi all,
Some questions, does any one here write music for short films,
tv shows etc?If so how would I go about doing this, can I make
30 sec music clips and give it to the film companey for them to
edit in into their film or do I have to put it in a video software
program(if so wich one,I have a mac).I have done several
commercial jingles in my small studio but I would like to work
as a freelance composer also.I will be calling a small film company
to offer my services, what should I say

I know there are a lot of questions in this post, hope its not to much. Thanks in advance.

do you know what kind of music they are looking for? do you know what the project is?...If they are editing it with an AVID or Final Cut I'm sure they know how to put music in and check it out with the video...to make life a little easier on everyone involved it would probably be a good idea to find out the sample rate and the bit rate they are working with and give them AIFF's...most likely it will be 48k/16bit...especially if its indie...

Is this a cold call or do you know somebody there?...the first thing anybody is going to say after you tell them that you are a composer and ask if they need any music for their projects is..."Ok, great, send me your reel"...

hope this helps...
