| Where are you, Somerville? |

| Lives for gear | He's got a good point, if you're feeling out of place and need to feel a little more like back home, Somerville has a huge brazillian population. You could at least find some quality "Homestyle food" there if you're missing home for sure. I just moved from Boston (well actually Somerville) back to NC. Places I'd go were I you: -Mercenary Audio. It's a little drive south of Boston, but the guys there are great (and are constantly on this board!) -Parson's Audio. I've just happened to deal with them a little more than Mercenary Audio, however I don't really have a preference. Les was good to me. -Sonic Circus. One of the few reasons i'd ever travel to Dorchester. If you need a console, or anything else that's huge they probably have it. I only bought some TT cables there (and for a good price too), but it's worth mentioning that they have a large number of consoles and other 'large items' there. -Berklee. It's a nonstop resource of highly talented and innovative musicians that will play for beer (believe me, I was recently one of them!). Also a ton of engineering types. Any night that's nice out, just go hang out on "The Beach" which is the sidewalk outside the 130-150 block of Massachusetts Ave. -Regatta Bar. Jazz. Everyone likes Jazz right? -Christian Science Library's Maporium. WTF? Yea, it's a cool as hell room. Ever wondered what it would be like to be in a super reflective glass ball? Very neat acoustics. Worth 5 bucks. The rest of the place didn't rock my socks, but it was a cool room. Some guy at the ASA meeting in RI this summer did some research on the acoustics of the room, but he lived in MI or something, and it seemed there was some more research to do. -There's a SICK and I just mean SICK alto sax player named Aaron (skinny black guy) that I know that plays around there a bit. He plays everything from Harvard Square (quite a bit) to a few gigs that he had at Lincoln Center in NYC. He's just sick man. If you ever hear a sax player that's just going nuts, but sounds great, and like nothing you've ever heard go up to him and tell him that Dave from Greensboro says Hi. I swear that guy is "The Next Big" horn player in jazz. The guy's amazing, and I don't say that about many bands/people except.... -The Dresden Dolls. Amanda and Brian are great people. Fun to be around. Funny as hell, and great musicians. Hit them up when they aren't touring around the country. Their shows are a a freakshow of awesome people, but they are so fun. If you need a place to track drums, or guitars (they have a SICK guitar/amp collection) I gotta plug for Taylor Barefoot's place (as I used to work there) in Brighton. Good prices, JH-24/Otari console, and decent room (helped build/design it, so I may be partial). Not my first choice for mixing/mastering due to not enough outboard and mixing ITB mainly (even with that Otari board!), but for basics, it's great. Of course there's a ton of other great studios in the area. Just walk around Berklee (they don't mind if you're not a student wandering around in there too much), and you'll see flyers. There's some cool guitar stores right outside of Boston too. One in Somerville on Highland Ave near davis has a great bass collection, but their guitars and amps are sometimes mixed. There's one south of Boston (can't remember the name) that has a TON of guitar pedals and some neat guitars. Jack's Drum Shop on Boylston is decent for drums and they like building decent client relationships it seems. Actually, right by Berklee there are a ton of studios. And when next season is around, you gotta hit Fenway park. Yes it's expensive, but as a new Bostonian, you have to do it at least once. Oh, and my best advice is to get some warm clothes! If you haven't experienced a Northeastern winter (last winter was nothing in comparisons to the 3 years prior to it), then it's going to be a new experience coming from Brazil. The weather is very dangerous if you aren't dressed right and you get stuck out there. Always have gloves and a scarff with you in the winter. Overdressing in layers is probably just enough Hit me up sometime. I'll be back in Boston soon enough, at least to visit. If you're in Somerville, Diva in Davis Square has a killer dinner special. It's called a Dinner for One, but it's really enough for 2-3 and it's pretty cheap (bostonian prices factored in of course).

| explaning myself I've been in boston for 2 years, and I know about the brazilian population. I was just looking for studio buddys. I met some berklee people, but a very few exceptions aside, they had no idea what they were talking about. Please let's not start a war, I don't mean berklee people anything ... But you guys know how schools are... it takes a research to know people who mean bussiness. I went to MI - LA 10 years ago and it was like that there. Maybe I am wrong but that is the impression that I got from berklee too. I am just looking for studio working people that i can maybe get together, know their studios, know what they are up to, maybe listen to projects, know what kind of stuff they are doing, to have some interaction. Know what skills I have that can be helpful and I can use to get out of shitty jobs and get back to music. Please don't take me wrong I think berklee rules, and for sure there are a lot of talented people there and actually, you know what, I will hang out there one of those days, to take a better look , but ... I am more looking for interaction with the real working world. By the way , I am in JP. Thanks of the tips on the city anyway. |

| Hey, I know Brian from before the Dresden Dolls, He once played bass with a band in my studio. At the time not a great bass player then, but a killer drummer even at 19, and a nice guy too. He can probably kill on a bass by now. I was just saying if you are new to the area, many of my Brazilian friends live in Somerville. Yeah, I am kind of suspicious of Berkley as well, but a few cool ones make it out. Tony, do you have a shop somewhere? obdrigado |

| We do "cocktail hour" on the loading dock on Friday afternoons around 4:30pm... not this Friday because everyone except me and Drew will be out at AES [so we probably won't bother with the loading dock unless it's a beautiful day and just drink in the warehouse]. Any/every body involved in audio is always welcome for a beer or 7 [actually the house drink has been Tequila since Drew started here at the beginning of the year... but the fridge is always full of beer, soda, etc.]... all we ask is that you call and let us know you're going to drop by... +1 508-543-0069... all the audio banter you could ask for a scant 30 minutes down I-95 [towards Providence... 45 if the traffic sucks]. Consider this an official invitation. Peace.

If you're into acoustic instruments, I would also put a word in for Music Emporium on Mass. Ave. on the Arlington/Lexington line--fabulous selection and they know their stuff. | ||

| I have had a few bad experiences with rock city guitars. The last one involved a super expensive and terrible setup for my bass, and they even stole my strap! I will, however, stick up for Dorchester, as I work at Ol' Dorchester High. |

I think it's a pretty cool idea to get Boston Gearslutz together and talk about what's goin on in our local area (there's A LOT). Fletcher, I'll give you a call sometime... sounds like a great plan. What city are you guys in? Is there a train runnin through there? I am a brighton apt. dweller... who spends money on studio gear. You could imagine that I have no money left to spend on a car ![]()

| I know Joe K from Rock City, just recorded a gig CD for his band Guitarzan, If you have not seen them they are flat out awesome, Russel Chudnofski is like a modern Hendrix but no copy cat, he does his own thing, sort of Peter Green from outerspace. Killer band and the drummer Jefferson Davis may be one of the best I have ever seen..no joke, great guys to boot. they play Toad on Oct 14th, I was going to record it live, but I have to be in NYC that night..but treat yourself if you can..tell em I sent you! Oh and these are not Berkley guys either. However, if you need a good guitar set up go to Mauradian over in Porter Sq. Cheap and good. Hey Tony and all you RI slutz, come down to Jake's on Richmond St I think, and see my band TB078 on Sat OCT 28th, I'll put you on the list (well really, there is no cover ever at Jakes) Last edited by Cujo; 5th October 2006 at 01:54 AM.. Looks like the openers of the night are The Cold War and Badman. Anyway do introduce yerselves if I don't already know you. And Tony I hope I can buy something off you soon! I dunno what yet. |

| Gear maniac | o commaKaze vive em South Boston... There's actually a really nice studio in Dorchester, that I'm almost positive is the older, original Fort Apache before it moved to Cambridge years back currently called Magpie Sound. No affiliation whatsoever with F.A., just new guys who took over the space. They have some amazing gear, super cool guys, good rates, and I think they're on here...Not to mention, if I'm correct, that space's walls have heard most of The Pixies stuff, Radiohead's Pablo Honey's mixing session, The Throwing Muses, and all the other early F.A./4AD stuff...EDIT: guess I was wrong about that one as Cujo pointed out and cleared up...still a really nice spot. Check them out, and there's plenty of reasons to go to Dorchester...It's real-life, while the rest(most) of Boston is like a bad Epcot Center version of London. I like Kissy Pig in Lower Allston. My band just tracked our drums there through Kerm's Neve board. Killer room, killer gear, very nice sounding...EP will be out this month. Hmmm...Allston is definitely still holding it's ground as "Rock City." A lot of places to see OK - pretty good bands. O'brien's, The Reel Bar, and Great Scott is Allston's take on the Middle East, although Cambridge still has a ton of proper clubs. We had our studio in Allston across the street from Kissy Pig, but we moved out of that space 'cos the electricity was filthy, and also one of the 3 of us moved to Austin TX. Rock City Guitars in Davis is cool...I deal with those guys a lot...for setups I go to Peter Stokes of www.brokenneck.com. He did The Clash's guitars, and a bunch of others...he's cheap, he's cool, and he's the man...on Boylston St. next to Little Stevie's. I won't bring my guits anywhere else... Maybe my bandmate & studio partner Charles and I may call a |
