Oh, How I dread This Session!!!!

A band that I used to record and do F.O.H. for who were once on a major label have been getting together and doing gigs over the last two years. It has been a blast at every show. It is a huge hassle because everyone lives in another state.

Well... now they want to record. Other than the MCA record and one session in Memphis I am the only guy that has recorded this band., but I recorded something like 120 demos between '86 and '92!

I don't have a studio where bands can record any longer, so they have picked a place that I don't know much about. THEY WANT ME TO BE PRESENT FOR THE SESSIONS...

This is going to go over like a led balloon!
I have been around the block many more times than the guy(s) who own the studio.
I'm sure they can at least get it on 2"... I hope.

The guy paying for it mentioned that he'd like to transfer it from 2" to PT and for me to get files as well. The engineer guy kinda' got jickey he said.

Sounds fun, eh?

If you're there during the tracking, for quality control...

Then mix it? As long as you're getting paid your worth, what's the problem?

Sorry about my Yankee upbringing but what do you mean by "jinkey"?

As long as your role in the situation is well defined and you're gonna be paid accordingly I can't see the problem in this... unless I'm not reading it right?

Basically, you'll be there to make sure things go right so what's the problem? Is it the gear? Engineer? or what?

JADED OLD FART!!!!

Just go, and "laugh" if you will at the poor "newbie". Or, go and be a man about it. Be helpful, but not a snobbish a$$hole scoffing at this poor engineer. The more faith you have in someone, the better they will perform.

If your just gonna hate being there, or make fun of the new guy, then don't get involved. You're just gonna ruin the project if you do.

JICKEY means "wierd" or hesitant about it.

When my friend mentioned he wanted to copy the 2" to ProTools the guy didn't "OK, sure!" My friend (the guy paying for it) ALWAYS gets his way, but he asks for a lot, too.
It doesn't matter becuase I can get it transferred.

No, the guys trust me completely.

The reason that it is being recording where it is centers on the fact that they have all done work there in the past AND they are getting a decent day rate.
Had they asked, I could have got a FAR superioir room with an 80 input SSL, all the outboard in the world and BOTH a Studer 827 and full blown ProTools at about the same price. One of my ex-interns pretty well runs the place and he does wonderfull work. He's WAY further down the road than anyone else I know. He's been Grammy nominated, not me! We discussed this yesterday and we decided that we'd LOVE to work together! I'm going to run this up the flag pole.

Of course I'll be the nice guy!
I'd never make fun of anyone.
I've experienced every vibe posible in a session and have been the diplomat too many times!
I don't need to hassle!
My hesitation is with the other guy because everyone knows "everything" these days.
It is his room and people never undertand that it is just recording equipment.
People have wierd habits that they hold dear to heart.

For one thing... I have been told that "there will be a mic'd up drumkit ready to go."
The drummer is flying in and can't bring his kit, but... I am VERY particular about drum mic' ing. Especially if I'm gonna' have to mix it. I'll be investing more time than I'll be getting paid mixing it, so I don't want it to be a difficult recording to mix.

I guess that if they insist on doing it there I need to insist that they explain fully what my role is in the project to the engineer. They just need to tell him I am producing the session regardless of what they expect me to do.. That would take care of things.

We'll see!
