| Click on "search" in the toolbar. This is probably one of the most widely discussed topics on Gearslutz, and there are literally thousands of posts in our archives about this very topic. |

| there is no "best" 1073 clone... if you are wondering which sounds closest to the original, FWIW Greg Wells prefers ( from what i gathered in his postings ) the Brent Averill and the Chandler LTD-1, but he didn't explicitly say "these sound the most like the original"; he just said those were the ones he preferred..... you will probably catch a bit of flack for asking this question... i know you were looking at the Neve-AMS 1073 DPA or DPD... the one thing i can say about the DPD is that its converters are ( i think ) made by Prism so they should be quite good... well we'll see what other people think, but of course the best 1073 clone is entirely a subjective thing so we will all disagree.... J.D.

What's the best car? Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Bentley? I think that a common response to this type of question is NOT to rely on the opinions of posters. Are they really going to admit something sucks after stumping up a lot of $$$? Have they got another agenda in dissing a product? The best 1073 clone is a real 1073. Any other answers presumes your tastes and applications which may not be the same as the responder. I suggest checking out dealers like Mercenary Audio, Vintage King, etc., and seeing if you can demo a unit or two in your environment... with your speakers and your set up. You may even consider renting a unit for a day... it's an expense but a fraction of the cost of the unit and you are able to use it in one of your sessions. Like the cars... the real 1073 is the Bentley... the clones are the other cars. They aren't bad cars... they are great cars and no doubt all the clones of 1073 are great too, in their own special way. Only YOU can decide which is greatest for YOU. ![]()

| I was recently at a place that had 1073s, Aurora GTQs, Chandler LTD-1s, BA1272s... and some more... According to this Neve 'freak' (and I say that with the utmost respect) the magic was in his 1066s... So who makes the 1066 clones?
