I'm sure his purist/minimalist/analog sentiments are commonly shared at his studio.

Perhaps, those engineers are a good start.

I myself can't really function w/out a little compression here and there, but that is because I don't have the kind of room Albini is accustomed to (not to mention his skillz). I KNOW that a little more dynamic range is WHAT my mixes are pleading for but it's tough...as soon as too many instruments get into the mix it starts getting squashed...even w/ no compression so I am doing my best to learn from the masters...
He uses compression...he just does not like it used as an effect.

He often speaks of using it on bass guitar, vocals and anything else that could use some dynamics control.

Obviously then, he prefers transparent compressors...GML are tops on his list...even the RNC is in there.
Look at his EQ list (http://www.electrical.com/class.php?page=outboard)

David

Although obviously not influenced by Steve, Bruce Swedien shares his "no compressor" philosophy. Might wanna check out his forum this month on here...

There's also a forum over at the Electrical site and Steve moderates one of the panels on PSW http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/i/6/15869/.

He plays a pretty good game of poker as well.
