API 3124 too much gain

When close mic'ing toms with MD421's through an API 3124, and the pad engaged, I'm still getting pretty high levels. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

if you search, you'll see this very topic has been brought up. but to save you time, look into getting line attenuators for the outputs - A Designs ATTY comes recommended. like giving the 3124 master volumes- the unit sounds nice in the red
