Gear of the Year

With the end of the year 2003 closing in, I thought it would be fun too see what you guys think is the 'Gear of the Year'.

I suppose one could base his decision on value for money, useabillity, after sales support or construction. But any reason will do.

Are you talking about something released this year? Or something that you bought this year and it was your most used piece?

If it's gear released this year, let me be the first to nominate

3 way tie

Benchmark DAC -1
Cranesong Phoenix plug in
Sony TransMod plug in

I think I could last a long time under interogation / torture if asked to chose just one!

if it's something bought this year, I nominate my 1957 Hammond C-3. Otherwise, I was pretty knocked out by Dan Kennedy's Great River EQ (which I'll tell y'all about as soon as I get a minute...)

All of the above devices are fabulous, but when I see a topic like this, I think of most innovative. For innovation, I'd say the Tascam FW-1884. That thing has some serious bang for the buck and is taking the portable studio to the next level.

You can divide it into two categories:

1. Gear of the Year (released this year)
2. Gear of the Year (your favorite piece of gear this year)

I do want to see a motivation!

The most talked about gear on the forumn this year were probably:

1) DAC-1-converter

2)Kurzweil KSP- efx box

3)Cranesong Ibis-hi end outboard gear

4)Fatso- digital enhancer

5)Chandler TG2-mic pre

My nomination for gear of the year would probably the IPOD.

Focusrite ISA 428 with AD card option.

It's not over the moon piece of gear by very useful as a front end to PT HD.

The other bit of gear once u get use to it is the Yamaha 01v96

Nick

The worst piece of crap I have purchased is the Neumann M147 mic.....oH that was last year....well it's still crap this year.

For me it's a tie

Cranesong Phoenix
URS Classic Console Plug-ins

Together, and on their own, they have made SUCH an improvement in my mixes.

Gear of the year for me would be a Fet47 that I just love ( and paid a reasonable price for ) and my Chandler Tg Mic pres. I think that both were released a bit longer ago than this calendar year ( especially the Fet 47 LOL ) but they have made the difference to my year.

That's an easy one for me: Pendulum Quartet
It's the only studio piece I bought this year (grudge I'm not a good gearslut)

but wait: I just ordered 2 Trakkers today

the Benchmark DAC-1!

It's changed the way I feel about 16bit 44.1K as a delivery medium.

The Manley slam! Havn´t explored too much about it as mastering comp ( can´t wait to have a mix ready whichs tracks were recoreded with it and being send through it again as two track ), but am blown away already by tracking. Clarity and presence is what comes to my mind as attributes.

Next contender as a undoubtedly great pre for much less cash I´d like to nominate the Demeter HXM-1. I´m willing to bet that there is nothing of comparable quality for that money.

Oops, that was more than one piece of gear ... So, let me add the Lynx card. Thanks to David Seymour who brought it to my attention.
