Question Artists on Myspace without music uploaded?

Hello everyone.

I was just checking out the page Brian Eno has on MySpace. There is no music uploaded. Not a single mp3. Just a blog, some information and updates. I wonder if there are other artists or bands doing the same, using MySpace "only" for its network features and not as a place where people can listen to mp3s?

I presetnly have no tracks on my Myspace page. But that's because I'm not happy with what was on there and want to put up some new material. Maybe Mr. Eno has the same problem?

Perhaps he doesn't have any music uploaded because he takes his business very seriously and doesn't want to offer people bad quality mp3s.

He uses all the other features and he has a lot of "friends". Obviously many of those "friends" wouldn't be there if his name wasn't Brian Eno. But I am sure many people have visited his official website after visiting his MySpace page and/or becoming a "friend", and even bought an album online.

So, I think this is very interesting - a musician is using MySpace but doesn't give away his music but instead uses MySpace as a free online business card.

Maybe this works for other people too?
Maybe this works for musicians less famous?
What do you think?

Hello... He doesn't have a "band page", it's just a regulat user account. At best he could have one song play....

I don't think it would be very difficult for a musician as famous as Brian Eno to ask the MySpace support to switch his "regular" page into a "band" account.

I think it is his choice not to have any music uploaded on MySpace.

So, is he the only one?

Perhaps Mr Eno doesn't own the rights that would
allow him to publish his music online. And he may be currently
bound under a recording contract that would preclude him
from uploading any new material as well. Or maybe he just
doesn't see any benefit in doing so.

I think it's an interesting question: what benefit would an
artist with an established career get from posting music on myspace?

Whoever knows Brian, would you drop him a note and ask him?

thanks

Rue

I'd imagine that if you are an established, or in Eno's case, legendary, artist you don't see any benefit in posting lo quality clips of your music on myspace.

Exactly - why should an artist accept low quality after doing all that hard work recording, mixing, producing, designing sounds....?

I agree with you guys, but this one is too easy. I'll tell you why. Have you actually tried uploading 320 kbps mp3's to myspace? when you go to play them they crash, because they're too big. more people will actually be able to listen if you encode at 256 (which also equals more plays on your counter).

If one of you guys have him added to your Myspace, why not send him a message and get the real story instead relying on speculation?

Myspace is not a hifi listening forum - it's all about reaching out to a gazillion people, networking, sharing ideas, fans and what not. I've seen many bands w/o a single song up and, as you might have noticed, alot of really well known bands are up there proactively pushing careers. The "I'm too well known for this"-crap luckily does not apply to Myspace, hence its popularity.

I agree with this.

I don't know about elsewhere, but in the Philly music scene, Myspace keeps us all connected and informed about what's going on in the scene, who's playing where, etc. A lot of collaborations have grown out of it.

The added feature of having MP3's posted is cool, but it's not what it's really all about.

It baffles me why so many are so angry about myspace.
It's like the T.V. - turn it off.
I happen to think it's a fantastic way of catching up with and listening to friends (and scritti politti and rufus wainwright and ...)

That's because they don't get it. And by the time they do, it won't be worth getting (I'm not sure it's worth getting today).

Eno probably doesn't have a music page because they require $$$ for this from a major artist.

If it is his page and he has made a choice not to post any music, it's his loss. I doubt many people will stay on his page unless there is some aural background.

i have not read their agreement, but others have said they claim rights to use and market any content uploaded. if this is true i won't be uploading any tracks either.

obviously

They retain the right to use the music you upload as long as you upload it, on their site. They can use it on their front page, etc. but the right goes away as soon as you remove it. No biggie. There is alot you need to be aware of on MySpace, but this isn't that important.

Well, my 2 cents suggest that if other businesses feel it promotes their music good enough then brian eno would as well thus leaving me to wonder if there is another reason besides quality (eno has licensed music and/or composed properties which have played on plain old stereo tv, no?)...

Could it be some kind of intellectual rights issued by MySpace that he rather remove himself from?

And, who cares anyways. lol. I don't even know why I responded to this thread? lol

I read it a while back and from what I remember they say that by uploading something to their site, they own it for what ever they might want to use it for, not just their web site. It seemed that the only right the artist has is that they can delete it when ever they want and MySpace rights to it are vaporized.

Keep in mind that the agreement states that if you upload something that you don't have rights to, you will be responsible for any and all fees/fines/charges if they get sued for using it and if YOU use it while it's on their site they can sue the crap out of you as well.

It's a long document but worth reading or having a lawyer read it for you.

i wish that all my posts were so obviously true. that seems reasonable if you can delete it to remove rights.
