U2 recording at Abbey Road

Hi,

U2's website explains that the band are currently recording new material with producer Rick Rubin at London's Abbey Road studios.

I came across what I thought was an interesting photograph from the sessions - any idea what effect the snare against the kick drum would provide?

That looks to me like a Yamaha (style?) Subkick.

That's not a snare. It's a Yamaha Sub-Kick, and it's very useful.

It's not a snare. It's Yamaha's subkick mike, to low frecuency stuff.

I'd like to try one... any experiences with it?

I just did a drum session with Lee Levin at his studio, and he uses a Subkick in addition to his inside kick mic. It really helps add the low end to the kick, gives it that nice fullness so you can EQ and compress the inside mic to get the snap and the Subkick for your bottom.

The SubKick is great, I use it all the time, but actually this idea 'snare against bassdrum' might be interesting. Gotta try it sometime.

Just in case you didn't get enough snare buzz and rattle in the bass drum track.

On another note, Rick Rubin and U2? Very interesting.

What Drums, actual drums you can hear ona U2 Album, someone forgot to put the drum Bus Fader up on their last album - drums kept vanishing when the guitar heavy chorus's came in.

God, that is so true. I love Larry Mullen Jr's drums, but in the last record they just couldn't be heard.

Maybe U2 will make a raw record again, not a 50000 track polished pretty fling like the last one.

So, on the drums, we have

OH=C12's
Toms=U87's
Kick=Subkick (didn't see a mic inside?)

What else? Who can spot the mics.

Bass drum tied with the snare ! Wow
I will try. We can get 2 "different" bass drum sounds in 2 different tracks, then blend it !
1 sound pure bass drum, other sound bass drum+snare sound...i think this last will sound like the 70s bass drum+snare disco style !

More easy than tye the bass drum in the snare !

Abbey Road doesn't *own* a pair of 1073s?

Wow Jules, I think this means you can *technically* put U2 on your client list! Sweet! (Here comes the sarcasm now): I think Fletcher would agree that since they're tracking through 1073s this will *definitely* be a great record.

I too hope they make another 'raw' record. They've been describing every record they've made since Pop as 'raw' and 'back to basics' which we unfortunately learn every time means 'safe' and 'a shadow of their former greatness.'

I used to not think lyrics mattered, but I think it actually can make an otherwise great song into a piece of junk. At a certain point, rock stars just run out of things to talk about. Compare the lyrics of their last album to, say, even Zooropa (comparing it to War or The Joshua Tree would just be not fair). "Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!" just doesn't do it for me.

Coldplay fell into that trap too, I think. Chris Martin is **ing a gorgeous actress and naming babies as a hobby and just doesn't really have much to say anymore.

Oh yeah. We're talking about the subkick. I haven't tried one, but I've never had a problem getting a kick to sound killer with proper tuning and a D112 in, Fet 47 out. I have an early 90s pair of Tama Artstar 22" maple kicks that just f'n rule. I've also found that when mixing, I try to get the sub OUT of my kick (I roll off at like 70) and let the bass guitar live down there.

Me too... Rick Rubin productions tend to sound thin and squeezed to me (except for the Cash productions). The recent U2 stuff (since Achtung Baby) sounded thin and squeezed to me... Just my taste I guess, but nevertheless... If you put those two together, I hope they don't add up like that

Yeah - it seems like once they realized their long-term impact on the music world, something changes... Sad to see this happening on the latest Coldplay record, too, though I now love that record after hearing it for a year...
