Convolution reverb

I dont see it mentioned often on this site. Now I know as y'all are Gearslutz, it probably doesnt appeal to you as much as you all like racks and racks of black boxes to play with.

However is there any technical reason why convolution reverb is bad? The results I heard using Pristine Space and the free stuff on Noisevault were amazing to my ears.

Now I know that convolution cant capture non-linear responses. Do digital verbs like the Lexicon series have non-linear responses? I know analog reverbs like The Roland Space Echo would have being based on tape etc.

Souldbrother,

there are quite a few threads on convolution reverb here on gs. Do a search for "ir-1" or "altiverb" for example...

Anyway, I get the impression that convolution reverb is used by a lot of slutz here. After all convolution does things that are not possible with a lot of hardware reverb and it can sound really impressive

Lexicon does have some algos that derive their spaciousness to some degree from non-linear processing, that cannot be replicated by classic impulse responses. But apart from that convolution is really really useful in a lot of applications.

Regards,
Bill

Heck, even my budget convo W2 by dfegadOO sounds pretty good. They were "giving it away" for $99 a few weeks ago, but I see it has gone back up to $199...still a good deal IMHO.
