| I currently use sennheiser E602 & a trigger setup via Alesis DM5. I am intrested in checking out the earthworks kickpad http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/KickPad/ Sennheiser MD-421 - I was at a small club and the sound guy had one on kick, it sounded great.

| D6 (although that AEA R84 that I'm gonna use as a mono "mid-room" mic about 4 ft. in front of the kit will be adding some serious meat to the overall sound, I must admit) |

| Each kick mic will sound radically different in the same drum. On certain kick drums a D112 works amazingly well, where as on others it might be an E602. I usually try about 4 mics on the kick through a pre without EQ. After listening and sometimes even recording each one, it becomes obvious which sounds better. If you try this, you will be shocked just how different the sound changes with different mics.

| My Gretsch Catalina set really likes a D6 down there. RE20 comes in a pretty close second though, and works well more often than not on kick drums that other folks bring in. |

| the original question was "if you only had 1" therefor I would recommend the flattest least eq'd mic. in that list it would be the RE20 while most the other mics mentioned are all great, a flat mic (coupled with an eq) will allow you to go in many directions, where as one of the pre eq'd mics (the E602, B52, D112 ect) will limit your options, if you are trying for a different sound to what the mic inherently has. in a studio, one day you may be going for a metal clicky kick, the next day a jazz puffy boof, the next day a rock acdc thud, if you expect 1 kick mic to do it all, make sure its a flattish mic, and whip out your EQ skills. ![]()

| Gear maniac | .02 I'm going to go off-base like most of the rest of the replies and say the D6. You can't go wrong with that multi-pack either, in my opinion. The i5 is a workhorse for sure. Out of that list that you provided, I guess I'd do the RE20. Good luck! |

| Lives for gear | I take it this means you're in a buying mood but on a budget. Bang-for-the-buck is a consideration, but so is versatility. 421's rule on floor toms, guitar amps, and bass amps, and they make great kick mics as well. They are common on the used market at around $250 -- I picked mine up for less. If you don't have one, get one. You'll never use that Beta 52 on anything but kick (and maybe bass cabs). Sure, they're cool, but if you're stuck getting *ONE* thing, I'd put my money where it would get the most mileage. For doing kick drum: give me a 57 and the "right" pre & EQ over a choice mike and any-old-pre. A "sweet" EQ (and my 1073 is the sweetest ever!) can and will "make" the kick sound.

| good points adamcal (re20) and greg (can't miss w/ the 421 - it's just great/ flexible). steve, you and i think alike atm25 is a fine kik mic, also useful for mutiple apps, includ some horns and low frq. vocals, toms, bass cabs, can be killer on upright bass JOOC, I WONDER WHO'D BE WINNING IN YOUR POLL IF YOU'D PUT THE 421 UP THERE? HMMMMM......

"I" mode. I find "V" a bit too sensitive on the output usually. Plus I'm not worried about adding a little low end frequencies from a high quality EQ.
