2. Yes I start with Audix and if the sound I am looking for isn't there (9 times out of ten it is!) then I move to other things. The D6 is best placed to one side slightly outside the kick. The D2 and D4 are very directional (30dB to off-axis) so they are ideal on toms when using gates.

I use a RE20 and a SM91Beta. The SM91 is very good if the kickdrum is well tuned, The RE20 is more forgiving |

depending on the drum and drummer just about any of those mics would work except the D112 which I think is a waste of metal and wire. Lately my combination has been D6 inside and U195 outside with alittle IBP. Before that my faves were either a D12e or a Beyer M88

You are so RIGHT... thanks for the tip.... Ive always had a love/hate feel about the Beta 52, i always depended on my D112 to get me thru everytime......BUT thanks to you and gearslutz i have changed mics again, I did what you said, i used the Beta 52 in a 20 inch sonar kick, pointed at the shell, straight up toward the tom mounts, wow what a open sound, sounds much better than my the D112. A true winner.

On the list provided, I'd have to go with the D112, but I usually use a D6 inside, and an ATM25 outside. I have a D112 too, but it doesn't seem to win in a fair fight... that being said, the bands I record are usually after one of a few sounds, and the D6 comes closer.

I generally get most of my kick drum sound from mikes that are outside, in front and in back and over top. I often stick a D112 up against the resonant head (or inside if there's a hole) just in case I need to add some low end. But if I'm pretty sure I'm actually going to need some direct kick drum sound, I'll usually go with the RE20. The D12 can be good, but it's usually better on a bass amp. And I've had bad luck buying D12s used - I had two at one point, and they both sounded wrong. Others I've used have sounded wonderful on certain kick drums and certain bass amps. I've tended to get good kick drum sounds out of my Altec tube mikes (M11 and M20), in various places around the kit. I've also gotten great sounds with Neumann U89s, RCA ribbon mikes, and Shure SM57s. But I have to say, this whole question is flawed. You don't go buy a microphone that's good for every situation, because there are plenty of situations where it'll be terrible. You're more likely to find that one mike is best in some circumstances, and another is best in some other circumstances. If you think you can just own an RE20 or a D12 and it'll be the best possible sound at all times, you're sadly mistaken. If you have to limit yourself to a single microphone and don't want it to ever sound horribly inappropriate, I would suggest an SM57.

I only use the Beyer Dynamics M88 and the Audix D4. The D4 is without doubt the best kickdrum mic for meaty metal kick drums, the M88 is more versatile. |
