Fender amp chimey ringing sound coming from the amp

Just wondering if anyone has any idea what would be going on with this fender deville 212 I'm using...THere some sort of sleighbell like ringing sound coming from it in the lower frequencys...WHen playing the lower strings of my electric...I think the same thing was happening with the fender twin I was trying to record also...I put my ear to the back of the amp and it looks like its coming from the box in of where the 2 smaller tubes are...If anyone has any experience of this let me know...This is also when the amp is powered and mid-high on volume/drive...

Getting a good clean overdrive on guitar is proving to be quite difficult without a bunch of ugly subtle noises included...

Are the noises coming out of the speakers? If so, it could just be a tube that went microphonic.

tubes
Pre amp tubes going microphonic.
You should be able to tap them and get a similar response.

Probably microphonic tubes.

With the amp on & at decent volume (i.e.: the level at which you're having problems), bang the top of your amp with your fist (not too hard -- don't hurt yourself) -- if you hear a pronounced 'ring' when you do this, the tubes are microphonic for sure.

Oops. db said pretty much the same thing. I guess I like my fist-to-the-top-of-amp method better...

If you're in luck, it'll be a preamp tube -- cheap & easy to replace (no biasing necessary).

i will take a screw driver or something and just tap lightly on the side off the pre-amp tubes to check for a bad microphonic one.
you will know when you get to the right one.

I once recorded a demo in the mid '80s for these metal heads called Rigor Mortis who were on Capitol I believe and the GTR player had two small Marshalls that had horribly microphonic pre amp tubes. The "BAD" tubes played a large roll in the sound. It was kinda' cool sounding!

BTW... they are easy to replace, but the preamp tube can change the sound of the amp drastically. Get a proper sounding replacement if it is microphonic.

Some good sounding tubes ARE microphonic!
