Thread Starter | Budget Mics for recording live drums Hi All I'm in need of some help choosing mics for recording a drum kit in the studio. However im on a low budget, and have searched around the web, and this forum for ideas. Heres what i have come up with as a very basic budget setup. AKG D112 (For Kik) Shure SM 57 (For Snare) 2 x AKG 1000S Condensers (For overheads) I need ideas for Mics for toms, and Hi Hat. Of course any other ideas for the whole setup would also be welcome. Please bear in mind that i'm on a budget Thanks for your help in advance Paul ![]() |

| I'd get a 421 or ATM 25 for kik. I hate the boxy cardboard 112 sound...just me I guess..... TIm |

| toms - ev co4 snare - sm57 kick - atm25 o\h -2 studio projects's b1's. hi-hat - be*****er ecm 8000. (if you need a hat mic) this is a cheap set up that will do the job very well for the money. |

| One with big hooves | You don't need a hat mic. Save the cash or get something for the room instead. In the last 5 years I've put up a hat mic three times. Once at gunpoint and twice because the hats were so far off axis from my overheads that I needed it. I should point out that it was the same drummer both times and the gun was an isolated incident. Still didn't need it in the actual mix though. Don't think about the C1000's for anything they're pretty crappy mics. Get the Oktava MC012's or Shure Beta Green 4.0 or whatever they're called now, ATM33's are also great for the same kinda cost. I'm not a huge D112 fan but they work. SM57's on the snare and toms and you should be good to go. I could talk about other choices for hours, ATM23's for sn and toms, Audix D series etc. None of them suck, it's just slightly different from one to another and the drum and drummer are still the biggest variable in the sound.

| Put up a hat mic if it's reggae or some other kind of carribean music as this is where most of the rhythm is for this music. It's more important how you place it than what type of mic it is, not counting ignorant extremes. Late 80's soul/pop is full of double hat O/Ds over drum machines, it's all about who's playing them

| I am recently re-thinking my e604's. Either they have been to beat up by the live shows or they just aren't giving me what I want. For live shows, they are a godsend, just too easy to use. I'm just not getting the air out of them, I am going to do a trail and recheck myself. They are very easy to place tooo close. |
