what are you cutting?

who's cutting alot of the high end on their guit tracks?

I find the SM57 is pretty brittle in the upper spectrum.

I usually find myself boosting a little of the hi-mids on guitars to make them a little clearer. Buss my guitars to a stereo bus, add like 0.5dB or so, just to clear things up. But then again, I'm tracking guitar rock bands that need huge, present guitars. I usually end up cutting a little lo-mid, but not much or else the guitars will get weak. Maybe with clean guitars, I might cut a little top, but I don't do much clean guitar!

What are you cutting?

Amphetamine sulphate with a little bicarbonate of soda.
Sorry, I'm not really but I couldn't resist saying it first!
Seriously, I don't use the 57 on guitars, so all I can suggest is trying different mics/placement or getting the guitarist to change his eq at the source - better to get it good before it goes down rather than after, IMHO.

A 57 is not a very bright mic. If you need to cut high's using it then you have 1 of 2 problems.

1. Your guitar amp is way too bright or too cheap.

2. Your not familiar with the way guitars need to cut in this range.

I use very small tube amps usuall so I'll add 250hz - 500hz to beef it up. But I never need to cut the top.

Some guys actually combine 421's with the 57 to add more of what you seem to have too much of.

Good Luck

On heavily distorted guitars I always put a low pass filter on to get rid of the shhhhh.... makes guitars stick out a lot more and not get lost with the wash of the cymbals.

Actually, I'm getting quite a bit of high end from my 57

I changed 57's to another one and it made a BIG difference.

I am using a Mesa F100

Great results today.

Thanks for your help.

I mostly record clean, funky, pop rock guitars. A combi of Amp farm, Sans Amp and a nice small cabinet have provided me very nice results. Generally a combi of Beta 57 and some nice condesner like the At405.
I don´t think the Sm/beta57´s are over bright. 240Hz for fullness and a hi-shelf towards 5.3k with mild compression.
I also like to focus on the arrangement, instead of applying too much delays and so, a second guitar slightly chorused and/or playing with sliglty "contratempo´s do a nie job. I did this a lot in my soon to be released album.

I haven't used an SM57 on guitar in soooo long. I usually remember cutting around 5khz narrow on analog and around 3k5 really wide & really deep for digtal. For some reason the 57 just always sounds too raspy to me. About the only time I reach for a 57 on guitar these days is when I need a solo to cut through a wall of guitars and other noise.

I don't have to cut anything...I'm using an R84 through an NV. Blending with a KM84 is nice too.

I'll usually go with a 57, but I record guitar with the "Slipperman Method" and that seems to take care of the hi-end problems.
