nice article

...i don't know if you guys have read this one:

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun0.../ferdinand.htm

.....i really did enjoy the article......especially this part:

"Less orthodox is Johansson's approach to recording drums. For a start, he often gaffer-tapes two bass drums together lengthwise and places a 57 inside, which he says never fails to give him a great kick sound. Elsewhere on the kit, he maintains a minimal mic setup: another 57 on the snare, 'anything' on the hi-hats and a pair of Sennheiser MD421s doubling up as tom mics and overheads"

Did anybody try the 421 tom, overhead thing out yet?

Any other cool articles out there?

cheers

I usually ( in a rock setting ) also use 2 kicks (not gaffered)one in front of the other(keeping only the beater head on ) with a couple of quilts on top and one or two small pillows inside to tame reflections in the tunnel. Then put a mic stand base under the second kick to level it out . About half way down the tunnel I place a Sennheiser e-602 and at the entrance I place a sub-kick. Makes for a really powerfull sound and the quilts take out most of the leakege making subsequent gating unnecessary. As for the 421 using it as a tom/over head, I imagine it would work but you'd lose a little impact, Seems like it'd be worth a try , I'll let you know how it goes!

I was kindof thinking I was going to try 421's as overheads sometime soon... because i really am just a fan of those mic's and I'd like to try to stay away from condenser overheads (i usually don't get to track drums in very nice rooms, either) next time around. And I don't like really huge/punchy toms... and have never been a sound of really splashy cymbals... when they sound too thin. I'm totally just thinking out loud here, i'll shut up now
