Subgroup Compression and Test Tones

I am curious as to what this following thread is talking about:

subgroup compression: who sends tones?

I get the gest of what is going on.. And I read the Brauer article that they are talking about. But I would like some elaboration on this technique, and in depth info about what this does.

Maybe we couldhave a little discussion about gain structure and how this helps.

thanks

poor guy - I think there aren't that many that use test tones for setting up compressors (and I think it's a strange concept because it doesn't account for your ears on side of your head)

but I admit to use test tones for setting up group compression - but I just make sure that what I put in is exactly what comes out. So I send 0dB and make sure the distressor (or any other comp) puts 0dB out. MB explains it way better than I ever could - read it there and try it for yourself.

I'm slightly confused by this...

Working within Pro Tools, I usually send a 1khz tone at -6db out to my buss/group compressors. Do I then adjust the input so that the IN meter on the compressor is at -6db, set my gain reduction, then raise the output so that the OUT meter on the compressor returns to -6db.

Or do you set the output so that the compressors meter is matches with the gain reduction?

-6db was just plucked out to ensure I maintain enough headroom when mixing ITB, so that I can ride instruments up with a little bit of room on the compressor etc.

Cheers for the help guys.
