To Use a "500" type compressor or not?

Hey Everyone,

Just curious about these "500" type modules and boxes. I noticed that there is not a large selection of compressors. Actually, am I wrong - there is only one... the API 525?

Is there any reason for such a lack of modules? I am compeltely new to the mods so forgive the naive questions.

Correct me if I am wrong, it looks like a good vocal chain would be the Shadow Hills > Avedis > 525 ???

Or is it best to skip the 525 and get a stand alone piece?

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

I think the 525 is a cool compressor but it has such a specific sound and it's quite touchy due to the fixed super fast attack. It destroys transients and can add audible distortion to a lot of things. The GR meter seems pretty conservative on it. That said , its cool for what it does. I just wouldn't get it unless I had alot of other options like 1176's, distressors, LA3A's etc. -stuff that works on a lot of sources.

I'm holding on for a Buzz, instead of getting 525.

Have heard good things about the Avedis, though you'd have a tough time convincing people to swap their 550a for it.

Shadow Hills Gama, Purple Biz and A-Designs P1 are probably the 3 most raved about 500 series pres for vox.

I've only got 2 512c's in my lunchbox right now but when I fill it in I think I'm going with 2 more 512c's and 2 EQ's. The EQ's are still up in the air. The Avedis look real good or maybe the Daking. Is Peter working on an EQ? I think for compression I will stay out of the 500 series.

i still nead to hear a P1 for myself. I heard the Shadow Hills on some examples someone posted and I really enjoyed the NICKEL setting. This leads me to believe the A Designs BLUE may do it for me vs the P!.

Won't be able to try anythng out till I get back from vacation. I have to fiend till the 16th!

The Nickel setting on the mono gama is amazing. I just cut guitar's last week through it and they came out amazing! Also, I own the Avedis E27 EQ and it is a fantastic EQ as well... Can't wait to get my Buzz comp at the end of the month!

Don't tell me you're squeezing the DCS idea into a 500 frame, or two... three?
If so, you have the Elixir, and the Essence. With two engines, could I humbly recommend either "The Extractor", or "The Juice"? Juice is also slang for steroids, so having a frame "on The Juice" could be cool.
