ASCAP or BMI?

Hi,

I am workin on a long-distance project with a guy from L.A. (im from Canada) and I was posed with the question of whether or not I am ASCAP or BMI.

Im a 17 year old unsinged producer.

First of all, what is ASCAP and BMI and second of all, would I fit in either one?

You are neither. Take a look at SOCAN (Canadian Society)...

ASCAP/BMI/SOCAN/SESAC are all performing rights organizations
or PRO's for short.

They are organizations that monitor how much
your music gets played/performed and they make
sure that you get paid.

If you didn't write the song (or your not getting credit
for writing the songs) you don't have to join. You could,
but it wont help you out getting your money as a producer.

As far as which one you should join, you could choose BMI/ASCAP for
representation in the U.S. (as I assume you live in Canada) if the songs
are going to be played in the US. For representation in Canada
I guess go with SOCAN, or any others that are up there.

Good luck!

As for as I know, you can't have representation in 2 countries. Because you live in Canada (ex Montrealer here), you should be represented by SOCAN even if your songs are rotating in the U.S. and all over the world. As for mechanicals (sales of CD's) look into CMRRA.

The only reason I thought this, was because on BMI's website
They say this

"The non-profit-making company, founded in 1939, collects license fees on behalf of those American creators it represents, as well as thousands of creators from around the world who chose BMI for representation in the United States."

I just assumed that you needed representation for different countries, but
maybe I am wrong.
