What To Put In Ready Trap Bags...Roxul Mineral Wool Not Rigid?

So I went ahead and ordered some Ready Trap DIY bags.

I know OC 703 is the standard, that's cool. Thinking about it...little pricey, though...

I have a Marjam location very close that sells Roxul mineral wool in the correct dimensions much cheaper, and was wondering how that works for people.

So the thing is, is that on the phone they told me that the Roxul mineral wool isn't rigid...is that the same stuff people are using for these? They say it comes in rolls, though pre-cut to the 2" and 4" thickness, and 2'x4'. I sure hope this is the thing...

Or are they referring to another product? If it is the right stuff, and I grab it, what, if anything do I need to do so they don't sag or look too dumb? Perhaps use cardboard as I think I've read that that's OK to use in a trap...I want to keep this kind of easy, and don't want to go the the "chicken wire" route or anything like that, and I know wood know matter how thin is a no-no, right?

Thoughts/experiences/suggestions/how-tos/Tips?

Thanks in advance slutz...

I'm in the middle of making panels...

The mineral fiber is not as rigid. If you lean a 2" thick piece against the wall, it will bend a little. But those bags have handles on the back, right? -so you can probably hang them just fine. I wouldn't stick cardboard in there, but perhaps someone else can chime in on that matter... or talk to ready traps about it...

703 is more rigid, but not as dense. It probably won't take as much a beating as mineral fiber in that it won't regain form if it gets kicked or something.

I guess it depends what you want to do with your panels...

WAIT!! I just re-read your post. If it comes in rolls, that's NOT what you want. That shit'll probably come apart as you try to stuff it in the bags. You want rigid 2' x 4' panels. (I left my previous comments in to help you decide which rigid insul to get)

Unfortanately it is hard to find rigid insulation locally for many, so you may have to order online...

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies guys...

Yeah, 6strings, I totally figured that the rolls of Roxul were a no-go, I just wasn't sure about what model #s and such...thanks for the confirmation...

I think I may go with ATS acoustics SAFB mineral wool to stuff the Ready bags with, as it's real price-friendly, and seems to have very similar specs if not just the same as 703. The 703 is 3lb. density, the mineral wool they have is 2.5 lb. density.

Anybody use this stuff? Will it be floppy, or will it hold up pretty rigid?

That other Roxul product you mentioned 2Leod, I'll make an inquiry about...is that pretty rigid? Good results you say, eh?

UPDATE: So I googled "insulation Boston" and found a ton of other places that have a ton of products in stock. I'll be making some phone calls maƱana...The ATS stuff was nice & cheap, but shipping nearly doubled the price.

Thanks

Avoid rolls if you can. They are usually for home insulation and lower density.
Go for semi-rigid or rigid. I have used both low density (Isover brand) and medium density (Rockwool brand, same as 703) panels ti fill Joel's bags based on application.

You can get mineral wool in board form. If you're going to use the 2" bags for reflections, I'd recommend a lighter density wool - maybe 2.5 to 4lb. For bass absorbers in the 4" bags, use 6 or 8lb density.

The only thing with the wool (especially the lighter density) is that getting it into the bag is likely to tear it up as it can crumble pretty easily. The 703, while a bit more expensive, will not have that issue and will leave you with a good performing and good looking treatment.

Thanks all for your replies...

Yeah, the roll stuff out of mind...in fact I thought it was a board until she told me it came in rolls, so I just got confused, now got it sorted out...

I Found another place that sells IIG mineral wool in boards, and am going to go for that...the density info. is super-helpful BTW, thanks again...

Worth mentioning as well is how cool Joel from Ready Traps was...he even called me to make sure the color scheme would be to my liking, and I'm glad he did, as we figured out a much better looking order than what I originally placed...very, very, cool...

I'm pretty pscyched to get my room treated nicely, as I've come to learn through research and experience that that matters much more than a lot of other gear, or really is more the foundation upon where your gear can really shine...

Thanks!

you can always use mineral water if that doesn't work.

we just did (24) 2x4 703 panels stacked horizontally (2' high x 4' wide) 4 panels high
wrapped in the cheap papery drop cloths from Home depot and taped to 10' 1" pvc supports
scattered around a 2,000 sq. ft. loft space in downtown LA - enough to break up the space.

worked really well for the live band rehearsals. we really heard the difference
when we broke down on the last night : ) MAAAAAAAAAN, CHAMBER CENTRAL.

So it turns out that the supplier I found is minutes from my pad, and does carry Roxul RHT 80.

How do you think this will fair: http://www.roxul.com/graphics/rx-na/...ENG-6-2-06.pdf

So now I will have 8, 4" traps and 4, 2" HF panels. I actually still have left over 4 sheets of 2 inch, which I may just sell locally, don't know if I will use.

What are folk's success with the combo of the Ready Traps DIY bags and Roxul RHT 80?(Or similar Roxul)

Also, I'm glad I was so close to the place, as I had to take 2 trips in my teeny Honda Civic...stinky thing is is that A LOT of dust and chunks scattered all over my car on the voyage. Will vacuuming it be fine, or do I have to go through extra measures to get it all out? How harmful is this stuff? I know it's not cotton...I took all the careful measures with dust mask, gloves, long sleeves, etc...little itchy.

The Ready Trap DIY bags were really fun to put together, and I must say they look really good...though of course that's not the point. However the blonde had to approve, as I lost my studio location about a month ago, and am taking my operations to the downstairs garden level, open lofty "living room" space of our condo.

Thanks for all your input...it really helped dudes...

Hey, I'm in the Boston area too, and looking to make some panels. What distributor did you end up finding that had the IIG SAFB?

Thanks,
Ross
