Shadow Hills Equinox vs folcrom + 2x Mono Gama pre

Im looking for a good summing solution and i have the Shadow Hills Equinox summing box in mind.

Since its a passive summing device with 2 500 series gama preamps for make up gain included, do u guys think a folcrom using 2 gama preamps for make up gain would give the same result?

If so this would save me a lot of money and I dont really need the extra features included on the Equinox.

Any thoughts on this?

I've thought about the same scenario except using a Speck XSum instead of the Folcrom (just because I could use the MixB option in my setup). You lose the St. Ives transformer option and the monitor controller options, but save some cash and have the option of using even more pres for makeup gain. The Equinox looks sweet and seems to be a good deal, so either way you should be doing okay, but you'd really have to try them both to find out what you're really missing.

I also heard that there used to be a version of the Equinox without the monitor controls called the gama deluxe wich went for much cheaper ( around 2k I believe)

Does anyone know if this version is still available ( couldnt find any info on the shadow hills webite at all for both units)?

I was inquring about this as well. Unfortunately the answer I got was that the summing structure/components are of a higher standard therefore the results will not be the same.

I'm going to try both routes and find out on my own - but this is the info I got from guys on this board that used them...do a search you
ll find the threads.

I am in the same boat, I am interested by the Equinox but I don't need a monitor controller, talkback ...
I sent a PM to Peter and he is not really interested into doing a lighter version of the Equinox with only the summing bus and the 3 ouput transformers : too bad

There is nothing lacking in the component quality or the topology of the Folcrom. I'm not trying to brag, but it works and is built very well. The reason it's relatively inexpensive has nothing to do with compromises on the construction. It's just an elegantly simple device. In my opinion, there's nothing more needed and there would be no real benefit to getting any more esoteric with the component selection.

The shadow hills stuff appears to be very well built too, and they're going for a particular aesthetic that probably affects the price substantially. Their stuff has a very cool look and feel (I haven't heard it). But I don't think putting bakelite knobs and magic eye tubes on the Folcrom would make it sound any better.

I can't help bumping this back up..
Yeah it's old, but still relevant. A lot of people have said they're going to compare summing via a Folcrom and 2 Gama's VS an Equinox, but I've yet to hear any results..

Price is a bad way to judge gear.

But looks are a good way! I just love the design of the Shadow Hills stuff! The Folcrum I'm not sure I'd let in the door even if they gave it to me for free ;-)
