Question about rigging up external converters w/ HD24

I guess the only digital inputs and outputs on the HD24 are the ADAT optical ones (which is different than Sony optical right?)

Anyway, seeing as there aren't many external converters out there with optical outputs, let alone ADAT optical (the same as light-pipe right?) how would one go about hooking up an external A to D converter to the HD24?

Is there an AES to ADAT optical converter out there somewhere?

P.S. I'm not looking to get an 8 channel apogee unit, which actually might be more likely to have ADAT optical connections, I looking for a 2 channel unit that I can use for mix-down purposes, but I'd also like to track with it where I can.

Okay,

Sorry, I asked that question prematurely, as I was able to find the answer pretty quickly via a GS search.

It looks like a format converter is what I'm in need of.

But let me ask this: Is there a format converter that does both
AES>lightpipe and AES>firewire?

That would be more cost effective as I also need something that helps me interface with the compooper.

RME ADI 4DD does everything but the firewire. If you need firewire, use the Alesis firewire link (they sell it separate).

RME, Lynx, Mytek, and Apogee all offer their converters with ADAT lightpipe optical outputs. Those are 4 (out of a few more total) of the most major brands available. There are also a few boxes on the market that convert AES to lightpipe (the Alesis AI-4 being one).

The Fireport is for offline transfers of data from an HD24 drive into the computer. It has nothing whatever to do with A/D converters.

I could be wrong but that looks like a Sony optical output on the Apogee 200, not an ADAT optical

I didn't look at the other two.

By the way, like synthoid mentioned, The fireport is of no help to me except in respect to editing or mixing ITB.

But I want to mix from the HD24>analog mixer and into the computer, which would make a box that converts to firewire also more convenient, as I wouldn't be tracking to the HD24 and mixing to the computer at the same time.

Somebody needs to make an everything to everything digital format converter and sell it for 99 bucks.

There is ADAT on the 8x192 though as an option, are you only looking at two channel units?....and that's why I mentioned the AI-4 for AES to ADAT lightpipe.
