Rather Ripped - new Sonic Youth

I have to say that this is my favorite from them in a while.. It's a great record - and apparently they found some of their stolen custom modified guitars... Anybody out there like the Plastic People of the Universe - for instance - "Egon Bondy's Happy Hearts Club Banned".. - man, what a fricken' record!

very telling

Apparently, Sonic Youth's new album is less interesting than Extreme's "Pornograffitti" in the bizarro world of gearslutz.

For the record, I think it's great (the new Sonic Youth) and I concur with your response to it. They are still a vital and innovative band --- and this is the 25th anniversary of their inception. But you'd probably get more response to this thread at the TapeOp message board...

Hence why we must always take someone's opinion of "sounds good" with a grain of salt. Anyway, right now I'm listening to Plaid's "Double Figure" - another great record.

bump

another one here who cares for sonic youth!

although the record is almost too much pop for SY in my oppinion, i really like most of the songs!
and the sound is really nice, too! a dirty and indie-feel but at the same time everything very clear and beautiful sounding (i know that sounds contradicting )!
it´s unbelievable how fresh they sound, if you think about the age of the band!

I was rather ripped myself at the pre-CD release party back in....what was it? June???

It was at Happy Valley in NYC with those 2 for 1 drink specials...good thing I wasn't driving!

Yah...Sonic Youth found their rock chops again. I didn't like Flowers & Ghosts so much, I should give it another chance...

I've liked the tracks I've heard so far quite a bit. Wasn't too crazy about the last couple discs before this one.

Still a great live band too - I actually enjoyed the show I saw a couple summers ago better than when I saw them in the early 90's..

I'm really enjoying this record. It's probably my favorite SY since "Washing Machine", and I think it sounds terrific, too.

Beranie, I know what you mean about "dirty and indie-feel but at the same time everything very clear and beautiful sounding." The sound is very naturalistic and unhyped, but you can hear the detail on everything.

Daydream Nation, Goo and Dirty are my faves. Have lost track of them over the last 10 years.

Those records are great. Sonic Youth are rare as they were original.

I will have to check out the new record.

Rather ripped=rather awesome

Yeah, lame hed, but great album.

Some of the best guitar tone(imvvvho) in the past while have come out of Sear sound, wonder why(cough, analog, great room, cough)? See Loose Furs' Born Again in the USA as a further reference.

Oh yeah, the song structure, it's returned!
