Thread Starter | UAD 1176/LA2A vs The authentic hardware
I'm hoping someone has access or links to audio clips available of the software models compared to the authentic hardware. Anyone? If need be, i'll demo the hardware and assess the results myself. |

The software is not even close the hardware in the UA line. Nick |

How about the original hardware vs. the reissue pieces of hardware of both 1176 and LA2A, and LA3A & 1178? Anybody got opinions comparing those? Not to derail your thread, just add to it, if anyone is interested...

Nick: I'm an analog cat with a small assortment of high end outboard. I'm simply looking for comparison audio clips for wonderment more then anything. I don't happen to have an LA2A, 1176, or UAD card (One of my good friends has a UAD - which is where i'd take the hardware for comparisons). |

I had a stereo 1176 version from Universal Audio with me and while mixing a record I used both the analog going D/A/D into pt and the BF 1176 version... and I must say the difference wasn´t night and day, BUT the hardware had a more "round" sound with a little dip on the high end... I liked both a lot |

I have the UA 2-1176 hardware and the UA 1176LN TDM plugin. The hardware works for me, the plugin is OK (a bit squishy sounding)and some of the guys using the UA PCI card say that the Uad card is better. But really you have to consider the cost of the hardware compared to the software and sound quality that you want. Nick |

I don't really have anything to AB as far as listening. I use plugins for stuff that is not so important in a mix and hardware for those that matter. EG: main vox always hadware, BV 's plugin (compressors) Gee UA 2-1176 not day and night against a BF plugin????????????? The day in blinding and the night is black as. Nick | |

Aearth: I appreciate your opinion. I have to have hardware for tracking, as I can't track with a plug-in in the traditional sense. Though I don't use any plugins at this point, I feel like you do. For minor corrective work, and/or less important elements, I could see how having the UAD plugs could be useful (in your case choice TDM plugs). My original question stems from the the wonderment of just how good these "secondary" processers could be. Almost equivalant? Not even close? You see where i'm going with this. |

the difference isn't so much in the sound --- which is appreciable but also in many ways negligible --- but in how the resulting sounds behave. the hardware tracks just go where they're supposed to with minimal fuss and muss. the plug-in tracks need to be sweet-talked into doing their part. it can be done with the plugs, i do it all the time, but it's not nearly as fun. and it doesn't sound as good, especially in the context of the mix. gregoire del ubk . |
