Surround Q

hey guys.
Any idea on this would be great.

Ive got 5 monitors lying around and a sub.

I wish to connect them up for 5.1. Hifi

A = Ive not seen any dvd players with multiple outputs, so how do i split the audio into the 6 separate audio components?

B = What type of mixing device can i get to control the volume of all the speakers?
can i use the Big knob?
Is there a surround equivalent?

What are you guys doing for surround?

Cheers

In order to get 6 outputs you will need to decode the audio signal, which is what the DVD player is sending out. Most home receivers to this and then supply you with the 6 outputs. I am sure there are DVD players that have already decoded outputs, so I would look around.

Once you have the analog outputs I would connect them to the SPL Surround Monitor Controller, Crane Song Avocet, or the Dangerous Monitor ST/SR. I believe Coleman also makes a surround monitor controller. So there are some options for you.

FYI, in order to get a really good sounding surround system you will need to spend some time to set it up correctly, especially the sub.

I used to have an NAD DVD player with multiple outs for 5.1

You can find a surround receiver for a couple hundred bucks. Something like a Harmon Kardon.

With a surround receiver, you control the relative levels through a menu, either onscreen or a scroll thru type menu.

The A-Designs ATTY 2D will work if you want to have real-time analog volume controls for each channel.

"Now it has been brought to our attention that ATTY2'D can also be used in a surround sound environment! So, we have silk screened the faceplate of the ATTY2'D to reflect it’s usage in the surround sound arena."

If they're unpowered monitors, you just need a good surround receiver, the best one you can afford. I have a Harmon Kardon and a Sony. They're both excellent, although both companies throw in far too much digital processing crap that only confuses other members of the family, as well as myself. (My SSL is easier to operate!) If more reverb & effects would have made the music sound better, it would have been added in the mix! (But don't get me started...)

For mixing from a DAW or mixing console, you might get one of the devices listed above, or the StudioComm Model 69 Monitor Controller (what I have) which is quite straightforward and simple to use, and sounds good. Works well with powered monitors.
