| JON, are you interested to try a new AMAZING preamp ? Hello, FIDELTA PAM-1 I've been lucky to cross the PAM-1, a new preamp totally amazing. The company name is FIDELTA, a french audiofile business owned by a genuine fanatic tube lover. I've heard an A/B (blind tested, 0.1dB level matched...) against millenia M2b (wich i was my reference previously) The Millenia was simply blown away...by such big amount that I was a bit deconcerted... bad tube ? No, the unit was in normal shape. Next I've try an other A/B with my neve 1272. The difference was even more drastic ! Ok I know 1272 is not all transparent and is quite sick. But the difference is bigger than class A vs class B. Quite the difference between mics ! That was the last few days, and I need more time to disecern that revelation. To my humble opinion, it's the best product available on the market. Retails price is 3000 €. You can try it for free during a week. I urge you to AB it with your existing setup. Good luck, Salvator

| Salvator, From the illustration, it looks as if there is only one potentiometer per channel, for input (???) Do you know what the plate voltage is? Mercî, mon amî. |

| Curve Dominant, Yes, the pod is for input. There isn't an output pod (beside the -15dB pad at the rear for -10 or +4dBu opereation), wich can be bypassed if asked. In fact, there isn't ANY active part in the path beside the tubes. It's a minimalist design; The power supply (5kg weight !) is external. That sound according to their esoteric mind. What is plate voltage ? What i know is that it can output about 31dBU = around 27 Volt I think. The guys are very kind & clever. Their financial margin are ridiculously low on it. Once the product will become a new standard, price will be revised. It's hand made and all customizable. For ex I've asked a swicthable impedance for ribbon/static mic ? No problem I've been told too that they can totally suit my need : Say want a one channel only with ADC option ? or 8 channel (7500 Euros) ? I'm still very impressed with the sound of it. It's soooo solid. And in stereo application, that give a very pure and wide field. The millenia is not as pretty, clean/unmasqued and ARTICULATED. The thing that is nice is that is very fast and dynamic but remain the sweeter preamp I've heard... Salvator

Plate voltage is, basically, how hard (or not) the unit's board charges the tubes. Most tubes for audio apps are spec'd for between 200-300 volts. So, it would be useful to know if the tubes are tapped at 280v, or 50v, or somewhere in between. It's a somewhat esoteric question, admittedly, but one which I've become accustomed to asking about tube gear in general. Perhaps I'm becoming a Gearslut in my (semi-) old age. Stranger things have happened. | |
