under $1000 Mastering Job? Where to go?

My band has just finished our 3rd full lenght album and I would like to get a decent mastering job done.

We are an Indie band with a Indie budget if that explains our situation. Musically we're in the CatherineWheel/ Trail of Dead music vain(ie: "alternative rock")

I've heard good things about Fantasy studios in SF.
I'de like it to be in California so I can sit in and Pick up a few tips.
Anyone you'de recomend?

Thanks, Eric

Bob Olhsson has done a couple of projects I recorded - everyone was happy with his work.

Gary Cobb form ARS in Chicago has done two records I've done recently. He's good at maintaining what i give him.

The mastering guy where I work is pretty damn good. We do a lot of indie stuff. And he can work on a tight budget if need be. His name is Mark Casselman, you can look his credits up on allmusic.com. Or check out http://www.orangewhip.com

I've heard nothing but good things about Alan Douches at http://www.westwestsidemusic.com/ I think he's done alot of the Jade Tree bands and some of my friends' bands.

Another vote for West West Side. I've been sending my stuff to him for about 2 years now.

Especially for the type music you're doing. Alan is great.

Here is the third vote for Brad Blackwood.

I have only been his customer once, but he kept in contact VERY well and I never once had any troubles. Oh and my album definately sounded much better when I got it back. Best of all he's a nice guy.

4 votes for Brad Blackwood at Euphonic. He was extremely curteous and stuff comes back from him glistening like no other.

Cheers,

BTW: I was only kidding about the voting bit.
I put a grin in there but it doesn't seem to translate visually and got cut off.

I to have a good friend looking for a mastering job to be done in the next few weeks. Is Brad Blackwood really that afforable for an indie band ($1,000)?

Thanks,
Justin

I won't put numbers in Brads mouth but let me say that cost has never been an issue. If my broke ass indie rock clients can afford him chances are damn good that you can too.

Alan Douches all the way. I am a very happy client - from both the engineer and musician perspective: I am one of jbuntz's "friend's bands",

he did an excellent job. Plus he mastered great stuff like ben folds five, promise ring, etc.

I think the answer, as with most audio-related things is 'it depends'. I have yet to meet a mastering person who won't work with you within reason but understand that you kind of get what you pay for. It also depends on exactly how much work is needed to the source material.

I think Alan at WWSM has done about 12 records for me and they've all turned out great.... a couple had a few small problems (not quite loud enough (the band wanted it LOUD)) and he fixed them within the week without charge.... which has not been my expierence with other guys.

He's normally booked 6 weeks in advance though, so you have to call ahead.

Which Ben Folds did Alan do? It's not listed on Allmusic and I can't remember seeing his name inside any of the albums I have.

Not to be too repetetive but...

Try Bernie Becker in Burbank, he has dog ears, great gear and is very reasonable and flexible based on your situation. Tell him Wade sent you and that will probably help some too.

I'll put in a vote for Colossal Mastering in Chicago. The studio is manned by Dan Stout, and has a great vibe. The product that you receive is also top notch. Just my 2 cents, for what it's worth. Check him out at: Colossalmastering.com

Cool. Thanks everyone!
I'm excited to get a song out to a few folks that offered a "test master".

I'll be sure to look up some of the folks everyone has offered. I really can't wait to get things rolling!

Keep 'em coming if anyone can recommend anyone else.

Most indie bands in our city use this guy. I have done several records with Rodney for about 1/2 your budget and have been very pleased.
