strange request from client

A client of mine suspects that his wife is cheating on him. So, like any suspecting husband, he placed a small digital recorder in his house to try to catch her in the act. . .sure enough. . .there was something there. . .but like any cheating, no good wife, she put the daughter in front of the TV and turned the volume up so she and "mommy's special pal" could have some privacy. The question is. . .how do I eliminate the sounds of scooby-doo and amplify or bring up the sounds of the "dirty secrets and general banging" that's no doubt going on in the background. . .please help me give this guy some piece of mind. . .help me play Private Ear. . .
Thanks

Compress the F*** out of it...high pass filter. Boost the female moaning frequencies...with a WIDE Q.

If that doesn't work...tell him to try moving that recorder someplace better than the living room.

And then post that sh*t for us to hear!!

I had a request like that last year but the guy seemed kind of creepy so I bowed out.

If that's true that is so wrong

Specialised Forensic Audio systems like Cedar Cambridge can handle this.

In a case with loud 'identifyable' background noise in the form of music/spoken word/..., results can be amazing if you have a copy of the background noise (the scooby-doo animation in your case). So, it's never a good idea to try to cover something up with anything identifyable like radio, TV, CD playing, ... or anything else that can be found a reference recording from.

It's not as simple as putting it in anti-phase onto it however, as there is serious distortion/altering of the signal because of the TV speakers, the room, the microphone used, ...

What Cedar Cambridge will do is statistically find correlations between the reference signal and the signal you recorded, and will eliminate the signals which correlate to a certain degree (depending on your settings).

After getting rid of as much of the scooby-doo as possible, you can further clean up the audio with other processes eliminating other background noises, hiss, ... and actually get an understandable conversation out of it

TV FREQ

So your saying that the tv freq will be in the upper freq spectrum?

Compress to bring up the background...50:1?
Cut high freq?

Oh yeah. . .it is real. . .I'll see what I can do bout getting some up. . .it may be a couple of days though. . .2hrs of audio. . .

kudos

Mess around with EQ - to see if you can pick something out..

If this is for a serious court case, you might pass it over to a forensic audio professional...

do the guy a favor, tell him there is no peace to be found in that recording, that he has two sane options:

1) come clean to his wife about his fears, express his desire to listen to every single one of her gripes about him and the relationship, to do likewise for her, and find what it takes to create something new that works for both of them. then do it.

2) come clean to his wife about his fears, and tell her that the climate of distrust and distance is too painful for him to live with anymore. apologize for everything shitty he's ever done, forgive her the same, and leave peacefully in the recognition that all things in life come to an end and while everyone is responsible, no one is to blame.

or, if he'd rather create even more pain than he's already in, for himself and the people he claims to love, tell him by all means to press onward.

Wow! That is a really level-headed, rational approach to the situation.

Unfortunately, (most) men in this situation wouldn't practice such restaint. They would most likely call up all of their friends after drinking a 12 pack, in tears saying things like "that f-ing bitch!" and "I can't believe she would do this to me!". And then proceed to make a jackass out of himself by confronting her in his drunken state only to result in his incarceration for public intoxication and disturbing the peace.

I just think it's kinda shitty to do it with her daughter watching TV in the living room. My dad always used to say when referring to women, "None of 'em are any good, son."

I have to agree with Ubik. The audio thing would probably be painful if it was nice-n-audible. It would present inarguable proof though, but still something he may want to forego having to hear.

If she admits it after being confronted, hopefully as calm and truthful as possible, no audio is needed.

Its normal to want to bust someone, with so much "egg on face" that its irrefutable (sp??) but he should think of how this may add to his own dismay in the matter...

Wow. It's not every day you get to hear stories about men who are both creeps and pussies at the same time!

Seriously, I wouldn't touch that shite with a ten foot pole. Especially since, in America, it's illegal to record someone without their consent. And if she sued him for palimony or wrongful treatment, you could be dragged in as a defendent.

Whatever that "stud" is paying you, it's not worth it.

Agree completely with ubik on this one. Although I wouldn't go so far as to say anything wimbly-wambly like "turn the other cheek", it is extremely important to not lose sight of the fact that THERE IS A CHILD INVOLVED. Even if this mess was able to be resolved immediately without a big brouhaha, damage has already been done to that child's self-worth & psyche. A loving parent would want to protect their child from any further damage.

Please advise your friend not to do anything directly, or that would encourage his spouse to act more reckless, that might result in his daughter being reduced to a 'pawn' to be used by the chess players. I'll assume that his cheating wife might not be as protective of their daughter, since she can't even be bothered to be discreet around her own flesh & blood (bloody #@!&*~ wench). And for his sake, it would be best if he always fights the urge (a damn strong one I would imagine) to stoop to the level of his cheating spouse to get back at her. The last thing he needs is a can of gasoline - open up a can of truth if you must, but stay away from the stupid juice (vengence).

It ain't gonna be easy, but if your friend can consistently take the high road, he will always come out better in the end. On the pos side, maybe they can work it out and she will eventually come to realize what a great guy she almost lost. On the other hand if it continues, a judge will take one look at the way he has acted... versus the way she has acted, and she will not come out looking like the responsible parent she probably sees herself as. This could be very important in a custody issue - after all, the child should be with the parent that is best qualified and sincerely motivated to look out for the child's welfare. Screwing some stranger with your daughter in the next room doesn't indicate much parental concern to me.

I'd tell him to save the money he might have wasted on an audio forensics cleanup job, he might need it soon. But if it's really all that important to get the evidence on her, have him move the recorder into the rutting room. It's not like she won't cheat on him again.

Not true. I know in Nevada it is a state law that only one party needs to be aware of the recording. So you can record someone, and the party your recording does not need to be aware of it.

I'm not sure about other states.

I hate situations like this. Makes me sic. What's wrong with society?

Yeah, I agree with Ubik et al.

If she's got a guy, maybe he should move on. It really stinks, especially when there are kids involved.

Blah. But I guess chit happens.
