Foot Stomping/Tapping Device for live and studio Bass Drum sound > Porchboard

This is my first post here. I thought you recording folks may be able to help me out with this one.

I keep seeing singer songwriters performing live who have some kind of device that they tap thier foot on and it produces this amazing low end thud that sounds like a sub Bass Drum. They use it to accompany thier guitar to add rhythm.

Whatver this device is, it gets plugged into the PA system and is an amplified foot tapping on whatever it is that they are using. I haven't been able to get close enough to the stage to see what exactly it is?

If anyone here knows what these things are and how they are made/what they are made of, I ould love to know!

I think it would make a neat DIY project as i think it is something one could make on thier own.

I have searched the internet and the only commercially available product I could find is this:

I usually just position my tripod boom stand within foot's reach, and stomp on one of the legs of the tripod. Over the years the legs have gotten a little warped, but it still holds my microphone up. Sounds pretty good when stomped on, too. Nice'n'bassy.

make a wood box and put a pzm mic in it. now you just have to figure out size shape and wood choices in order to make it sound good. or you could just buy one from www.prochboard.com

You could get an electronic drum module and a cheap kick drum trigger and have pretty much any sound you wanted. Might not be the cheapest route, but you'd have a lot of options.

Had a fella come through not too long ago that had a box about the size of his foot and 3 or 4 inhes high with a mic in it. That sound infinitely better than the Wolftone piezo stomp box the guy that played next had.
