Room Treatment

Ok.. so I have a room that is basically 10 x 12... something like that. Almost a square. I mix in here, record in here, and sleep in here. In the future I might make my closet into a vocal booth.

Anyways- Question is! -

Cost effective room treatment? In a 10 x 12 room with bare walls- what am I going to need to make it sound good, less reflective.. worth recording and mixing in? I can spend at the most $250-300 for something that will stay with me.

DIY basstraps made out of 703. You can search here or google for more information. Where are you located? I'm about to sell some of the bass traps i made now that i purchased some "pro" traps.

Lots of info here on the subject ... do a search.

I just bought some 703 from CWCI in the City Of Industry (L.A.) 12 pieces of 2'x4' 2" thick sheets for $133 ( buy 24 sheets )

Fabric should cost you $100-$150 (find a good deal) ...... that's a good start on your budget.

Do the corners first, then your direct reflections. Double or triple the sheets in the corners to 4"-6". ( I glued mine together with a little 3m adhesive spray ) then reinforce the corners with a little bit of packing tape.

For a little more $$ have the sheets on the outside of the corners be covered w/ frk.

The big boys should weigh in soon ..... like we said do the search.

My point is you CAN make some serious improvements on your budget.

Do it

Good luck !!

o yeah there are off brands of compressed fiberglass that may be cheaper than owens corning ......
I was told 703 = 3 lb density
I bought off brand 5 lb density for my cloud and it works great.

703?

Does 703 work better than foam placed along the walls? Sounds like a much cheaper option.

I'm also curious if anyone has any diagrams that might show me how to tame a 12 x 10 room with 8ft ceilings. I'll post a picture of what I'm dealing with later...

Today I took apart my bedframe- now I can prop up my bed on the wall to give me more space along with using the mattress as an absorber.

If I were to get some 703 and make these happen- where on the walls would they be placed? Do you do the full corner from top to bottom? I only have one true corner without a window or door in the way.

Suggestions appreciated.

Here are some pics of the room-

This is a deep subject, and a complete answer requires far more than will fit into a single reply here. The short version is:

* Broadband (not tuned) bass traps straddling as many corners as you can manage, including the wall-ceiling corners.

* Mid/high frequency absorption at the first reflection points on the side walls and ceiling.

* Some additional amount of mid/high absorption on any large areas of bare parallel surfaces, such as opposing walls or the ceiling if the floor is reflective.

For the complete story see my Acoustics FAQ:

There's a lot of additional non-sales technical-only information on my company's site, linked under my name below.
