Hey Ryan allaccess - Did you record Glenn Hughes' latest?

Just curious, what with Chad Smith and John F being involved...

th eoverdriven mic pre reminds me of some o fhis vox on Burn... Amazing sound on "Nights in White Satin" (or is that Knights in white satin) :-)

Cheers

Andy-

Vocal sound was John's Telefunken 250 -> TG-2 -> LTD-1 (or 550) -> 1176 for record.

My friend Ted White did most of the recording. I got the basic sounds and he ran with it. Vocal sound was all his for the recording.

In the mix I used an 1176 on most of the record.

Thanks for the compliments! I love the sound of that record...

That album sounds great. A friend of mine just lent me the disc. Glen has a great set of pipes. Drums sound great as well.

Mixed on a Neve 8078 with Tonelux EQs on all drum tracks to 1/4" 15ips tape.

the whole record was tracked in 3 weeks of 8 hour days. Basics all live. Cut in Chad's living room!

I'm glad that someone bought the record!

Cheers,

Hi Ryan,

A rather sad geeky observation, but on a photo on the inside CD cover I notice an API lunch box with a couple of API525 and 550A what did you use these on?

Cheers

Steve

PS Wonderful sounding album

Hey Steve-

Good eye! My fiance took a lot of those pix...

Those API modules belong to Ted White, my friend who took over tracking while I finished mixing the Chili Peppers record. We used the compressors on the 2 mojave mics that were in front of the drum kit, capturing the overall picture of the kit. I used those in lieu of overheads on that record.

I think that Ted wound up using the API EQs on some of Glenn's vocals, but I'm not sure what else he may have tracked through them. I'll point him over here and see what he says!

Cheers,

Ryan Hewitt

Cheers for the reply Ryan,
I'm currently putting together a 10 slot 500 series rack and It's just interesting to know what other folks are using them on.

Wonderful sounding recording BTW

Hi Folks,

Just got wind of this thread, thanks to Ryan. Yes, 99 percent of the vocals on that record were recorded as Ryan stated. To be honest, I didn't use much eq, but for pulling out a little lo to lo-mid or such. I'm not a big fan of eq'ing the crap out of shit to tape. Just get off your ass and move the mic. The combination of the 250 and the Chandler TG-2 was ridiculous. Throw in a dab of the 1176 for some control and it was magic. I originally had my Lawson L251 up, but when John let us borrow his 250, we just had to try it and it worked out better for Glenn's voice. Just enough extra thickness. Glenn's voice is just bad-ass. Easily one of the best I've ever worked with. His pitch is always spot on, and he's quick as hell. We'd bang through 9 to 12 part harmonies like you read about. Pure Rock and Roll. The basics (drums/bass/gtr) were done the same way. Literally 3 to 5 takes and done. What you hear on the record. A fun record to make and I owe Ryan many thanks for recommending me for that gig.

Thanks to Andy for noticing the over-driven mic pre thing. What first happened by accident, ended up making the track. Everyone wanted to leave it in and duplicate it for the effect. A little "hair" on it never hurts. It also shows what great control Glenn has over his voice, because he could saturate the pre at the same phrase consistently, without completely distorting the shit out of the track. Pretty cool.

About the 550A's in the picture... I have a lunchbox with 2 512's, 2 525's, and 2 550A's. The 512's were used on some of the Room mics, and acoustic gtrs and strings. The 525's on the front of kit Mojave mics as Ryan said, and acoustics. The 550A's on acoustics, piano and strings.

I think that's it. Thanks for listening!

Cheers,

Ted

Wow--- Thanks Ted for the extra info. Yeah, I love that overdriven tone. Nice and thick, and exciting... Its very different to the "standard" overdriven vocal sound we tend to hear
