I think it was recorded very quickly, in about two weeks and I seem to remember they just grabbed whatever was available, including an sm58 - there's something about it in one of the beck biographies - certainly wasn't a clinical session anyhow

I saw some of the sessions briefly, just visiting. As I recall, Nigel had the desk (modified API) preamp, into a DBX 160x compressor (he used them on a LOT of things, I think he even brought his own to the studio).

That being said, Beck's voice IS really good on its own, especially when you can hear it without double and triple tracking. He's very underrated vocally. Like Bowie, he usually knocks a vocal out in a single take.

I'll vouch for that. I have seen him a few times and the last one was for the SEA CHANGE album and the dude just did not drop a note all night long... So accurate and consistent its a shame that only a few artists can pull it off like that. I'm sure everyone's job would be a bit easier if they could!

Cheers

I love sea change too; Beck writes to his voice, and it works. However, he's not much of a singer. He tends to gets pitchy when he tries to hold a note for more than a couple of beats (e.g., guess I'm doing fine). It's great singing, but not really "accurate".
