i have a 4000 and LOVE it... but at this moment, i would get the 2500. the 2500 is basically the big brother to the 1000 with a bigger, better operating system now.. there are only a few difference now that seperate the 4000 and the 2500.. 4000 has a 300k note sequencer, the 2500 has an 100k sequencer. they both fit hard drives. they both have usb, but the 4000's is much more advanced (you can plug up a computer keyboard to type in information into the mpc, and more like the "aksys" program--the 2500 is only looked at as a hard drive to your computer..), the 2500 has chop shop and direct recording whereas the 4000 doesn't... the 4000 has smpte along with mtc and mmc, but the 2500 just got mmc and mtc-and physically doesn't look like it will ever have smpte. the 2500 has all the i/0 expansions maxed out of the box-you have to buy all the expansion for the 4000.. the 4000 can have up to 512mb of ram, and the 2500 is only fitted for 128 ram... there are other features but these are the ones that i think that will help..

The architecture of the 4k is substantially different: it's a Z-series sampler that's "piloted" by something that acts like an MPC. It's a real beast, but you'll get up and running faster on the 2500, I suspect. Had a 4k for a while, which was overkill. Picked up a 1k, which was just a toy. Still planning on adding a 2k or 3k at some point, just for the workflow. Couple transport buttons and some pads to bang on --can't beat that for getting something down fast. |

If you can afford an mpc 4000, take a serious look into it. I currently own a 4000, 2000Xl and a 2500. The 2500 is a great gap filler between the 4k and the 2kxl. The 2500 is smart, pretty well built and sounds decent for a mid priced unit. Im keeping my XL just for its forward midrange sound (which can sound great on percussion). The 4000 has the best timing IMO, its 960 reso, coupled with an Intel CPU makes it superb for experimental drums and creating unique grooves. It can be an over kill if you dont use its sampler section (which is a full 24/96 Z Series sampler). If you need to tap out tight drums and dont wish to break the bank, cop a 2500. You wont regret. I love the direct record feature for quick ideas from my romplers. |
