Summit TLA models

Whatsa difference between the Summit TLA-100A and TLA-50 models? Aside from size. (I searched first, didn't find any comparisons.)

Thanks!

Everything inside is basically different.... But, they are both tube based compressor units.

The Summit web site points out that the TLA-100A is a tube/solid state hybrid, but it doesn't say this about the TLA-50. Other than that, the site seems to imply that they share the same sound. In which case, it's hard to follow why one would buy a TLA-100A.

Anybody used them both? Thanks!

That's because the TLA100a uses a famous discrete op amp on the outputs and the TLA50 does not.... I have used both and they sound very different. Not to say that the TLA50 isn't usable, but it really doesn't compare to the TLA100a.

Can you describe the differences? And I take it you prefer the TLA-100A?

For what ever reason the 50 is quieter than the 100,
but I much prefer the 100.

best

I've never had the chance to use the 100, but the TLA 50 I own has been very nice on bass, acoustic, and vocals.

Summit TLAs

Two words:Dave Hill
The 100 was his take on an LA2 with a 990 Op Amp Output. Great when voltages are properly tweaked. I doubt that you'll get Dave to do it, seeing that he was thoroughly screwed by Summit. The new Summit gear may be as wonderful as the rest of the flood of Chinese gear floating around project studios.

someone here has a brain cloud, mr waturi.

Are you totally insane??? comparing summit gear to chinese gear. you obviously don't own summit gear. "The new summit gear" refers to the half rack stuff I would guess, I have a rack of TPA200b's and Tla100's, although they have their place, I'll NEVER get rid of them. and yes, i do own a tla50 as well. VERY usable and not at all shitty sounding like most chinese crap.

the site does not imply they have the same sound... they are just the same type of limiter (ala la2a). and no, I don't work for summit.. just a long time fan. EVEN the stuff after Hill.

I am insane

I have 2 TPA100s (one is Dave's original prototype), 2 DCL-200s, an EQP, 2 EQFs, and 2 TLA50s. I tried 6 TLA 50s before I picked these. Quality control is down, but the TLA50s design is good. Ask Mark McQuilken. I still wouldn't put them in the same category as those built in Wisconsin. The freq. switches suck on all the old Eqs because they are silver contacts. After 30 years in this business I agree with you, I am insane for owning Sontec, API, and Neve gear which I also bought new. Plunking down 20k for a new Intel Mac and PCIe cards most certainly qualifies me, so I guess I’ll have give all the money back I’ve earned in those years. I just know that when a piece of gear is built to a fixed price point (played any new Gibsons?) the product suffers. Instead of reading Summit's web page, listen to the gear and decide who is insane.

tla-50 = worth it or not ?

i do own 2ba-221 pre and although not my fav pre its very well built unit so i was hoping tla-50 is at least as good as 2ba.... cos i got no chance of trying it out...

I recently bought a tla-50 for use on female vocals in a live setup. It does an excellent job. I also tried it in the studio where it is sweet on (acoustic) bass. Worth the money (600-700$?) but it is not a tla 100.

Absolutely worth it and the best bang for the buck! I say you won't be disappointed.
