Playing live with a drummer and Ableton programming- help!
Hey,
I have recorded some 'backing track' wav files in Pro Tools, which I have bounced out and imported into an Ableton audio track (to clear things up the backing track wav files I created in Pro Tools don't have a click track on them!)
Basically what I need to know is how I can get my drummer to play along with these backing tracks live by having a click and backing track in his headphones (which he can alter the volume of on his personal mixer) and JUST the backing track coming out the speakers to the audience. I am very confused as to on the master track in Ableton, it talks about 'cue out' and 'master out' and I don't understand what '1' '2' and '1/2' refers to within my setup. At the moment we can only get click and backing track in the speakers and his headphones. I use a Saffire Pro 14 interface (which has a few outputs) and a connect 502 mixer. The input into the drummer personal mixer (the connect 502) only has one line in- is this the problem?
The connect has one mono line in and two stereo line ins. The saffire has 4 mono line outs which can be grouped as 2 stereo line outs (1-2 and 3-4). I would do the following, create two identical stereo program tracks of your backing music in ableton. Assign one to go out 1-2 on the saffire, and one to go out 3-4 on the saffire. Print a click track, meaning don't use the internal metronome but actually print an audio track that has the click sounds on it. Also assign this to go out 3-4. Send cables from out 1-2 on the saffire to front of house. Send cables from out 3-4 of the saffire to one of the stereo inputs on the drummers personal mixer. Now you can use the separate tracks in ableton to control the level going to foh, the level going to your drummer and the mix of click/program going to the drummer. Mind you I have never used Ableton but this routing would be easy to set up in Logic or Pro Tools. Good luck.
