Any 'no nukes' here? R U clinically compressed?

Any one recording drum room mic's uncompressed? And doing it later..... ?

I just tried this and think I may be digging the flexibility at mixdown time...

I might have been suffering from clinical compression!

Discuss.....

Always have a pair of unprocessed AT LDC's as room mics, but also use a Tele U47 in front of the kit, usually about 2-3 ft from kick drum, down low. It goes thru a 1176 all buttons in.

it totally depends.. If it it not a componet part of the tracks vibe, i will usally go uncompressed, but it never feels the same for me, compressing a playback vs compressing the pre output... Botyh ways can sound great, but I am saying that if I am lookng for heavily compd room mics at tracking, I track it that way.

To Clarify, lest I find myself flat on my ass with slipper prints on my forehead....

If I ain't mixing, I ain't mixing. IF the mix guy thinks something left out that i wlould have left in, they would have hired me to mix it.. or him to track it , right?

I don't compres the room mic much ever. They are sent to the drum-sub compressor during the mix. I like the sound of omni mics about 6-7 feet out at waist height.

Whenever recording with very high ratios,- I always record both compressed AND uncompressed . I normally do this with rooms and snare.

When using a nuke setting I find the resulting signal better when compressed on the way in. However it's not always what I (or the mix engineer if different) want in the mix so I can then go back top to the uncompressed signal and try a more subtle setting.

More often than not when mixing, I'll use both compressed and uncompressed in some blended form.

Yes, most of the time. The drums are tracked elsewhere with no compression or EQ. I will almost always add compression to overheads, even if it's only a little.

Usually I never compress when tracking, but will always EQ.

I add compress (if applicable) to the tune when mixing.
It affords me (and/or whoever's mixing) more options.

I usually compress room mics a bit when tracking. Sometimes it's really light, small ratios just to even it out. Other times I'm going for the 1176 all-in. A few weeks ago I tracked an EP and used no compression on the stereo room mics. Didn't compress 'em on the mix either. Go figure.

One of the things I've been playing around with recently is using a close room and a far room mic. So far it seems to be working best with an omni as the close mic with a bit of compression and something really trashy, like an SM57 right into an 1176 for the far room. Put 'em in mono or spread 'em out to 10 & 2.
