Thread Starter | Great mixer for mixing NOT tracking
hi,
if id like to dedicate the preamp price factor towards better headroom/eq, which mixer should i look into. i have plenty top end out board pre's and dont need any in the console.
thanks!

I agree... the quintessential "good for mixing, lousy mic pre" desk

Yep- SSL- don't think you'll save much on the pre amps cost wise though!

Are there any decent mix dedicated to mixing under, say, 400 euro? Might be noisy, might be colorish, but must be glueish... Just mix without pres, without eq, without everything, only for analogue summing and setting the volume of each channel (everything else ITB or by HW processors)?

Have you tried looking into a midi device that has just some sliders on it that might be compatible with your DAW?

I think soundcraft makes one in the spirit line. That's the only thing I've ever seen though.

SSL, like everyone else said. It's the "mixers console"

SSL is still priced like Neve etc. which take under consideration the mic pre's price. considering that, is there a cheaper solution for saving money? isnt there any high end console WITHOUT mic pre's? just lines and eq's?

What about the amek“s and euphonixs desks, seen them in several big studios, not as costly as ssl/neve consoles.

Depends on the budget- I know my tech has LOADS of vintage Neve Routing modules that he wants to do a line mixer with... but you won't get EQ's with that style... a mic pre doesn't cost all that much to make compared to an EQ- not all that cost effective to not drop one in while you're there! (so he keeps telling me anyway!)

you can build a tonelux console with no mic pres. as little or as many channels as you want.

| I second the Tonelux recommendation
Sounds like you already have your preamps of choice and don't want to spend money on more preamps. You should do a search and read about Tonelux. The modular strategy of Tonelux might make sense for you. Though I have some very nice preamps for my project studio sooner or later I do want to get some off the Tonelux preamps. In the mean time I have the ability to mix 24 tracks on my Tonelux rig.
