Upgrade to Pro Tools 7.2

Has anyone experience with the latest from the Digidesign-stable ?

Good or bad... any comments welcome.

I'm still sticking on 5.1 in OS9.2!

Are the latest versions even compatible with my Mix system??

I didn't like 6 much and the 7 I used earlier this year nearly caused me to commit murder!! We had the high end guy from the store make 3 visits in a session to try to make it as happy as my 5.1!

We are now with 4 machines (G5 & G4) on 7.1 and I must say that there are just a few minor issues... We do a lot of film-work so that means a lot of tracks (until you run out of voices on a HD 3 accel) in 5.1 surround, but the they behave well.

I have my Oxford EQ plug-in not working since the upgrade from 6 to 7 and sometimes the dual-processor fitted macs seem slower from time to time than on the 6, but beside that I can't complain.

Although they messed up with the total rearrangement of the menu's. They make me look like a novice to my customers when I'm wondering where they putted the strip silence window again...

I've heard from some colleagues that they had lot's of trouble configuring their rig, especially for 96k recordings... I don't have to much experience with that... that's probably the reason that I'm quiet happy.

To answer your question PhilE, Mix is out of the question from 6 on... and that's the reason that I'm not that happy with the way Digidesign forces us to keep up with the upgrading and spending lot's of money to insure yourself that you will not get stuck with a non-supported system (> see my recent thread in the moan zone)

7.2 is going to be a great release. There are TONS of new automation improvements that alone make it cool. PT is extending it's lead in the DAW automation race, especially if you have a supported controller.

Mixing ITB? Just because you're not good at it, doesn't mean it sucks.

They sell the i-Lok authorisation already and you can download the soft on there web-site

http://www.avidstore.com/index.cfm?o...=8115-55827-00

http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...wnloadid=29724

The strange thing is that the charge different prices for it depending on the country you are living in -> see my thread in the moan-zone

I'm almost considering it! I cannot get enthusiastic about most of the advancements- I run tools for editing and storage not really plugs or automation and use it like a tape machine... I just need stability (and a couple of plugs )
I want to soften the eventual move to HD but just don't see a lot of the supposed benefits from the rigs I have used in tracking rooms (I only have a mix/ overdub room of my own).

Really looking forward to the VCAs, grouping pans, grouping FX and the new automation stuff (like if you are looking at prior automation data as you write new ones, it shows you the new data as a real-time red line...sounds so silly, but it's awesome)

PT6.4 is the furthest you can go on Mix, and I think something like OS10.3.9, but verify that part on Digi's site, but 6.4 I'm sure of

PT 6.4.1 (latest for Mix H/W), with OS 10.3.9, and Quicktime 6.x is stable for me, though aside from Plug Delay Comp and a better Add Track Feature there's not much different about PT 6.4.1 vs PT 5.1.3, so I still use Pt 5.1.3 under OS9 more often than not with Mix H/W.

The only reason I prefer 6.4 over 5.1 is eq and dynamics 3. Those are worth the upgrade IMO.

...that and I prefer using legal plugins. We all know that the main reason people stick with OS9/PT5 is because of the cracks.

That and a billion other cool new tricks. How's about this: A new automation type called "Volume Trim" which is sort of like another volume line on top of the existing one. Why?

One obvious use: Imagine you're printing out final mixes and you need to do vocal +1, vocal -1, etc. But your vocal track is full of automation tweaks all over the place. Just set this trim to +1 or -1 and it takes everything with it. Then if you love it you can "coalesce" it into the normal volume line.

That's an obvious use but there's many others. Check out the "What's New" pdf or look at the website promo thing. There's so much new stuff.

I never quite get this often regurgitated complaint...

People seem to have this weird obsession with having to be on THE LATEST version of whatever software they are using - and then they blame the manufacturer for the fact that they have to pay for the upgrade, or it doesn't support older hardware. If your happy with the features of your hardware and don't feel the need to upgrade, fine. Why do you HAVE to upgrade your software?

At least they'll PAY you for your old hardware when you upgrade. How many manufacturers will do that?

Digi is not a perfect company, by any means, but I'd say Apple is a hell of alot worse a culprit of the forced upgrade phenominon (but there's already another bigger corporate pariah to blame all of our woes on in that arena).

---

To the original poster, haven't upgraded yet -- new automation features = cool, especially if you use a worksurface -- new video features = cool, especially if you work with digitised video -- otherwise, doesn't look like anything too incredibly exciting.
