Thread Starter | Mic for Radiohead type voice What kind of mic would be good for a Thom Yorke type of voice with the theatrics of Freddy Mercury? So far, I've tried using a tlm103 and ADK TT area 51 into ->Purple AUdio Biz OR DW Fearn -> Distressor the ADK sounds far much better than the tlm103 but i want something a little more grittier so it's not as pristine as radiohead's vocals. hi end as well as middle end mics. |

| Well Thom used the Rhodes NT valve mic on som,e of the earlier material and freddy used the AKG C414EB.I think with those 2 singers you could have pretty much used anything and it would come out sounding great. |

| Do a google search and here are some very specific detaisl on York's vocal chain. I've heard some raw Queen tracks, and I'd be shocked i that vocal mic was a 414 and not a 47/67/251. |

Thread Starter | ive did the search and all ive found was the brauner vm-1 as his mic on some of his later stuff.. did you see a specific post or have one in mind? i searched for yorke and googled radiohead vocal chain. any other ideas? and personally i dont like the way yorke is singing now a days with the exception of maybe "I will".. though I miss his early covers of "Nobody Does it Better" I just happened to have a singer who sings similar to him - seems like more and more clones are popping up now a days. |

| Lives for gear | I've also heard that he was using C12's and U47's...I think there is a short of him in the studio in Meeting People is Easy that has him into one of these. I know Nigel Godrich had some work done on some vintage tube mics with Telefunken USA.

| disregarding everything i've heard and read, what i would look to for kid a (and later) radiohead vocals is a u47 and/or 251. but just because the guy sounds like thom yorke doesn't mean i'd produce him like thom yorke. if anything, any vocal similarity is something i'd downplay, both in gear choice and artistic direction, but that's only because i find derivatives and imitators a bit... ahhh... . gregoire del ubk . |
