recorderman with unmatched mics?

any one ever tried the recorderman technique with un matched mics?

i dont have any pairs lft but i fancied trying it with a c451 and either a 414 or a m260 for some flavours...

is this an awful idea?

I recently did a bunch of drum tracks over this last week and miked the kit like this: I had a kick and snare mic and 2 room mics. The room mics were about 5 ft. high and 8 ft. out and 6 feet apart. I measured them from the center two toms and made sure they were in good phase. The rooms mics were a AT4047 and 4050. All this was going through an API 3124 and I got great results. The room I was in really helped as it had 18 ft. ceilings. I personally like to use mismatched mics as long as they compliment each other. You may want to ask Fletcher about using 2 different mics as OH's as he does this quiet a bit from what I've read.
Just do what sounds good.

Though I've been working with different drum micing schemes lately, I have used the Recorderman method quite a bit and love it's reliability. I have tried an unmatched pair using this style with interesting results. Not too long ago I put an AEA R84 in the 'over the shoulder' spot with a Beyer M160 over the snare. These are not matched and don't even have the same pickup pattern, but I was looking for an 'interesting' sound over a 'precise' sound and I think this got it. It was actually still quite cohesive. I'd say it's worth experimenting with it if you're looking for something new. I've been meaning to try this out with different LDC mics.

I do it all the time- You can get a more interesting stereo image that way (of course), and interesting can be GOOD...
