Looking for vocal mic suggestions

Trying to find a good vocal mic to fit my voice. I don't have the luxury of trying them all out so I thought I would ask some advice before I started researching to narrow down the list.

The most I can afford would be around 1K. I'm a singer/songwriter but usually have full backing band when recording.

I usually play acoustic but do add some electric for leads and some flavor in chorus, bridge, etc.

My voice is somewhat thin right now from lack of use. Don't play live as much so I don't have the strong voice I once had.

I'm told I have a combination voice somewhere between John Lennon and Ryan Adams if that makes sense. I can nail either voice so I assume that is why they say that. Not a deep voice but not overly high either.

Since my voice is thinner, I keep getting thin tracks. I'm running with a KSM 44 into a RNC and RNP into Pro Tools. My results are average right now. Messed with every combination I can find and can't seem to get a bigger sound vocally. I set my mic pre very high and use a little compression. I don't have big changes in overall volume, and when I do, I'm smart enough to back away and stay out of the red. I can usually get the sound I want when I push more volume but the subtleties of my voice is some of the strong characteristics. Just can't get that to transfer onto computer.

I chose the KSM 44 over AKG's including 414's, All AT's up to 4050 and a few others. Recently tried a C1 and thought it sounded better on my voice than the 44 but thin. I brought out the overtones of my voice in high frequency but made it thinner with the bump in highs. I'm thinking maybe a tube mic would get me where I want to be. Just need some warmth and a little bump in highs to get those overtones. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I like the combo of KSM44 and Great River..Seems to pair nicely for me..As for different mics...so many choices look into the AT4060 at the price point..Good luck

Hi

The right preamp is just as important as the right mic,in your case possibly a valve preamp would help too....

But its all down to the price you want to pay....

Do a search on this forum for more help

Good luck........

Regards Paul

The KSM44 is not going to add much meat to your basic sound. Assuming a U47 is out of your budget, maybe you should audition an AT4060.

ADK A-48 (darker), ADK TT (airier), Soundelux U195 (either dark or airy with "fat" switch).

Since you said you record live with a band, how about dividing the $1000 budget into two or more microphones?

You could, for example, try a classic dynamic, like an EV RE20 (or PL20), Shure SM7, Beyer M88,
Sennheiser 441, etc. It would help keep bleed
down for one thing.

My understanding is that out of all these, the RE20 tends to work for most all voices BTW.
I just picked up another EV 666 off e-bay,
and they sound very similar to a RCA 77DX.
(EV designed them that way for broadcasting use). Very warm and fat. Direct ancestor of the
RE20.

Also, the Studio Projects T3 is about to be
enhanced pretty soon. If you e-mail them,
or post at their forum at www.recording.org
you could find out more about that.

Another interesting try would be the AEA R84.

Classic dynamic (RE20, 441, SM7), U195, or AT4060.

Along those lines, I sang through the Speck 5.0-whcih I think has a very fat, present, and clean sound- on my band's last record and got a lot of compliments on the vocals (which is unusual for me). -E

I'm still enjoying the much maligned TLM 103.

Don't forget that other preamps will size up your sound differently. Neve knockoffs, Phoenix DRS-2, the newest Great River... (although I haven't heard the RNP)
