I always set the faders to -10 if I start a mix with the faders up.

Or, I'll bring them all down, and start pushing up things to see how they play with each other...then go from there.

That's a starting point. You have to remember that tracks build up. If you set them all to -10, your RMS might be -5...

This, of course, all depends on how loud they were recorded too.
