some advise please

I posted this in the hip hop section but im not sure if it was the right place. Few things.. any help is apreciated.

Firstly we have set up a booth in my mates garage. we have double glazed glass between the two rooms. Id say the garrage is 5m across 2-2.5 meters deep and about 7 or 8 feet high. There is alot of echo. were currently collecting egg cartons to create multiple layers of 'insulation' (i guess thats what you call it.) where it will raise out to 3 layers in someplaces grading down to 2 layers then 1 layer. Hopefully that will decrease tha large amounts of reverb that are in there leaving it warm but not dead. i think we will leave the roof as it is. Would this work?

secondly. the equipment. OK im planning on buying a studio projects VTB-1 preamp or sm pro audio's tb-101 (which is a channel strip with compression). but am unshure which pre or mic to buy. I like 2 styles of sound for my voice. its deepish (higher lows) and raspy with slight siblace. Ive been recomended the studio projects B1, the sennheiser 835 and 935, the electrovoice re20, sure 7m, heil Pr-30 or PR-40. theres a start to a list there... alot of them being out of my price range though.

The two sounds I like:
1)Somthing that will leave the rasp there but sound warm and present perhaps soundding slightly silky, but can pick up my lows and mids and wont overdo my highs. similar to "stickey fingaz: decade (album)" and "canibus: c section" ((song) perhaps not as silky)
2)Second i like the sound that styles of beyond (megadef) tends to use. I really like Ryu's raspyish sound with a silkish control over the vocals. I also dont mind the more controled sound of takbir with alot of 'silk'. are any of these sounds possible with any of the equipment im looking into?

I dont have an overly large budget. I live in australia so it really costs me more. The pr 30 and 40 are good cheaper options to the sm 7 and the re20 i think. anyway i hope i have given people enough detail to answer my question

thanks

Hi Docmattic.

In a word... NO....

Bad idea.

Start here...

http://www.realtraps.com/facts.htm

There is a ton of reading on this site, it might take the day or so to get through it all but it will save you plenty of frustration. Do the work now by reading this info then building it right or do the work twice later because it is wrong.

This page might seem like a sales pitch and in some ways it is but Ethan is a great guy who has a great wealth of information to share.

Also check out Glen's site here...

Another good guy with lots of info for you.

Good luck.

In my old band room we used egg cartoons on the walls and on the ceiling and a soft carpet on the floor. The egg cartoons removed some of the echo. It's a cheap way of treating the room to make the acoustics better and far from ideal. If you have money to spend on better stuff, don't choose the egg cartoon route.
