Drum Mic Recommendation?

Looking for ideas for far ambience mics to compliment KM84 overheads.
Budget for stereo pair about $1,000.
That obviously knocks out U87's.
Also has anyone tried the Lawson L47SH? Supposed to be fet47-ish on bass drum.
Thanks

Hey Chris,

I would put the U195 in line for front of kick as well.
I would be insterested in trying that subkick thing, yeah to lazy to wire up a speaker.
I have been using a pair of M160's for room of late.
Or a pair or AT SD omnis

with your km84's as OH, all you need is one more mic.

don't bother with stereo if you only have 1k to spend. Start mono until you can afford stereo. You'll be stuck two not so good mics when you can have at least one good mic as FOK or something or place further away.

For stereo ambience I find the Earthworks TC30 omnis excellent and they'll probably be less then a grand. thumbsup

I keep trying different things for room mics. Then I go back to a pair of AT 4050s on straight stands at their lowest settings (about waist high). I measure them to be equal distance for the BD, usually around six feet. I put 'em in Omni and away I go. I decided on the record I'm making right now to a Great River MP2 and it's great for room sound. I usually use the GR for Overheads during basics, but I like to change things up a bit.

Ditto that. They DO compliment the KM84's well. A sizeable, but still useable step down would be the ECM8000's. If you are in a tilesque live room, the Royer moded Mog MXL's have worked really good for me. Even put together, they are well under a G for a pair. YRM-Blah blah blah.

I'm already budgeting extra funds for a front of kick mic (47ish).
As for waiting 'til I can afford stereo, I've seen guy's using a pair of 57's for room ambience sometimes. Also Dave's recommendation of the Beyer's are well under a grand. A pair of second hand Coles would be about a grand, as would 414's.
Sorry to sound like I'm disagreeing with you AND I usually go for the most expensive mics I can afford. However, I would have thought for room ambience there must be a few choices in the $1k - $1.5k range.

U195 as FOK or inside bass drum.
