u2 feat. Mary j. Blidge "one" vocal chain?

Hey fellow slutz!

Quick question: I really love mary j. blidge's vocal sound on the duet with bono, where they perform "one". Do you guys have any suggestions regarding her vocal chain?

Thanks in advance!

I have absolutely no idea, but my guess is an SM58 into a Neve 1084 preamp.

Is that song autotuned to death? or is it just me?

Sorry to be a downer as well: Some records take me a long time to 'discover', U2's 'Achtung Baby' was one. I mean I knew the hits from the radio but it wasn't until last year that I finally bought the CD. I was COMPLETELY floored by 'One'. A fantastic song, great arrangement and IMO a once-in-a-lifetime vocal performance.
I could listen to that song 100 times over, incredible.

So then heard this remake and I must say that it totally sucks. Mary J. may be a good singer but simply showing off vocal chops and those dreaded 'modern R+B melismata' doesn't equal 'emotion' , 'power' or 'feeling'. They're trying to be more intense here and it totally backfires. The vocal interplay between the two makes Sinatra's 'Duets' sound like a backporch live session, in other words it sounds horrible.

I feel the same...

V. obvious pitch correction on Bono...

M.J. Bliges performance is just ******y IMO, and not even particularly well executed ******y either.

Sorry...dunno what mics were used, never could listen to the song long enough to wonder. Although I did wonder whose bright idea this collab was...

'Orrible Orrible version !!

Why on earth did they do it ? Was it for some sort of event\movie ??

I second the sentiment that M.J. Bliges vocals reeks of putrifaction. It's unlistenable. No vocal chain in the world could save that sorry excuse for a yoodle...

I've heard that U2 died in a planecrash after recording the Actung Baby album...the albums after are just put togeather by replacement jocks...

I dont know what is in the vocal chain, but i know what's missing:

THE MUTE BUTTON!!!

Mary J.Blige should write a book "How to ruin a perfectly acceptable pop song and then do it again, and again, and again...."

This is not the first time she did this. She is a quite a veteran in doing it.Last thing i remember was that track from The Game and 50 Cent(which was just fine in its original state). But then came Mary and destroyed it.

I'm holding my breath for the next "One"

Well, too bad that you guys have no ideas about the vocal chain, but i have to admit, otherwise than the great vocal sound, the performance is not that amazing.

I don't hope that she'll do a collaberation with metallica's one

How ironic, I bought that song just yesterday (with Mary J singing on it).

I bought it because it is one of the few times in recent memory that I was truly moved by a performance. I heard the first few notes of her vocal and first thought "oh no, not another over-sung vocal performance". However when I listened through I was exremely impressed.

I love her groove and choice of notes on it. I realize most of the comments thus far are that she ruins the song but I think she kicks it hard in her version.

Different strokes for different folks :-)

while we are on the subject... what about "rappers" who take great songs (Everything Breath you Take) comes to mind and mumble/talk over them? Then to make matters worse you've got butt darts on BET making comments on the "great NEW song by...." like they wrote the damn thing.

it blows my mind!

I saw her perform it live at madison square garden a few days ago and she really did an amazing job with it. I was very impressed with how well she fought through some bad sound earlier in the show and took over and performed like a true pro.

I thought the audio in the video (mtv) sounded horrible but that's usually the case on my television.
