Autotune 3

My version of this is the Direct X version. The directions blow. Either it isn't functioning properly or it is the most poorly design piece of *klonk* I have ever seen. I have had issue with Direct X software in the past. Is it possible this is the case here? Would the VST version work better?

Specifically I am trying to use Graphical mode in Cubase SX3. How do you save the changes? Playing back the track doesn't engage "Pitch Correct" which puts the changes out of sync and leaves a mess.

I am trying to contact Antares but you need a reg code to even email those lousy bastards. Naturally my reg code is magically not in their database so now I get to wait for them to sort that out before I can even contact them.

More importantly is their a tutorial somewhere on this software? I need to get up to speed on this

Graphic mode doesn't really work that way.

You need to work in small sections and buss the vocal track to another track and record the results.

It's kind of crazy with the power we have in our computers that Autotune can't save an entire vocal track worth of manual tuning.

Hope this helps.

Thanks man. That's interesting. I hadn't thought about that approach. I have been trying to work a phrase or two at a time but with the playback not in sync with the corrections the results were a disaster. I can't believe this is how the pitch correction is done on the major albums. There must be something else I am missing

The other thought I have now is that for particularly troublesome pieces is to apply the plug in auto mode to the track and export it. Bring that track back in and reapply the plug. to tune it up a bit more. The idea here being that heavy handed correction results in an unnatural sound. Perhaps a couple of passes with gentler settings may get it there with a lot fewer artifacts.

In SX3 if you right click on the clip, a dropdown menu will appear. If you chose "plugins" then mouse down to your autotune and left click it it will come up.
Go into graphic mode, click on the "track pitch" button then hit preview. It will loop till you stop it, but it only has to play once through. Now you should have the pitch as lines in the graph. Draw your corrections and then hit "correct pitch" and then preview to hear it. Once you're happy hit process and it's done to the clip, no need to bounce or anything. Make a copy first, say a duplicate track. After it processes SX will ask if you want to do it to all clips or just the new version. Select only the new version and it won't mess with your original track. The quick way to do it is to cut the sections that need correction into seperate clips with the razor tool, then you're only working on one word rather than a whole track.
Then go get Melodyne.

Hmmm... I just have to say that I LOVE Melodyne's user interface. So much so, I can't even imagine someone else thinking it blows. What more could you want? Pitch, vibrato, pitch drift, glides, note separation, timing, formant, and amplitude all before you clear as day on a piano roll... and all individually manipulatable. Pick a tool, click and drag. Easy as pie.

I guess different people's brain's work in vastly different ways. From the first time I opened it, I was like... Wow! I get it.

Just out of curiosity Double Decker... and I mean no disrespect what-so-ever... What would you change about Melodyne's interface? To me it's pretty much perfect.

Certainly better than that weird red line that goes all over the place in Autotune.

Thank you Led. I hadn't thought about dropping into the clip like that. I was just tracking the pitch from the standard playback. Dropping into the edit mode makes a lot of sense and certainly will solve several issues.

Thanks again!!

As for Melodyne, it sounds like something I will look into at some point. No budget for it right now. This is a shoestring project studio. The few bucks I have for gear are better spent elsewhere right now since Autotune is already paid for.

If I had time I would haul the singer in and beat him til he got it right. But they won't pay me for months that would take so I am doing what I can.

Have you tried the latest version? They updated the interface a bit, and changed how the tools work.

I am with Rufus...I love the interface.

(autowhat?)

+1 Melodyne

The only thing I don't like about the interface is that going between it and Logic is initially confusing. I want to use all the same methods for zooming in Melodyne as I do in Logic.

Oh well.

Well, maybe if Apple buys Melodyne and starts including it in Logic that will happen. Wouldn't be a bad move. Definitely the Beat Detective killer they need. Imagine pushing a button in Logic and the track turns into a melodyne track. I'd puke for joy if that were possible. They'd need to add group editing as well though to make it work. Group 12 tracks of drums and be able to push and stretch hits back and forth with a handle on all 12 tracks simultaneously. It's coming soon I'm sure.
