Mixing is an art - so a lot of talk about mixing is like dancing about architecture. It's also part science, but a lot of that depends on the gear you have. So from that perspective, I would say the standard "RTFM" covers a lot of ground. I don't know if there is any paint-by-numbers Mixing-for-Dummies types of books around ... I wouldn't buy one if there was. Every mix engineer has their own style, and tricks and taste. 'Behind the Glass' by Howard Massey is great, because it's basically a lot of interviews of famous mix guys. You get a lot of alternative, even conflicting, views and ideas. Mike Stavrou's book is contraversial, but I love it. It's more for guys who know how to mix, but want to take it to the next level. Not gear specific - more about altering your mind (hence the title). It's not so much the gear you have, but what you do with it. A great producer could use your same gear and create a better mix - why? Because of his mind, more than anything. I think you have to be constantly learning. If you learn something new every day, that accumulates into a lot of knowledge. Don't limit yourself to one book. Google can find a wealth of stuff that you would otherwise pay a fortune for. |
