Nobody saw this

This is not Phoenix Audio. It's manufactured by Thermionic Culture in England ... It's just going into production.

Can't believe I'm the only one that had the pleasure

Hi

I saw it, it was near the bottom of this rack...

I thought it was a sexy piece of gear... I loved the "industrial" looking gain reduction meters!

It can't be just going into production cauve I've owned one for nearly three years. Maybe they've just started selling to USA.

It's a fantastic compressor. There are two main versions , regular and T model. The regular is quite soft but also quite slow. The T model has was made for some people who wanted a faster compressor. It has a harder sound though. Mine is a hybrid of the two.

The designer Vic is a great guy who works out of a shed at the back of his garden. Although the units are manufactured elsewere I believe they all go to him for final calibration. I needed a new set of valves once and visited him in his shed where he set it all up for me, calibrated it and even made a few mods, only charging for the modded parts.

hmmm ... The guy at the booth had said it was new and didn't even have a price on my first trip around the floor. They came up with one on my second visit ... $3300. No dought they should have said "new" to the US.

Whatever version I tinkered with seemed quite responsive, very smooth, very rich, didn't exactly strike me as a hard sound, although I only played with it for about 10 min and was so enthralled by what I was hearing I didn't think to dig deeper. It basicaly left me dying to hear it on a vocal or across the right mix ... say acoustic oriented.

Quality control out of a shed ... gotta love that .. so that's where the richness comes from That makes it worth the price

Its a beauty... Vic made a modified version for me and i've been using it for couple of years. it is amazing not only for the comp but if you push your mix the valves come to life and its a very special unit.
i'm just waiting for it to come back(changing valves) but in the mean time i bought the STC-8 and i love it love it love it !!!

mac black,

I'm looking for something extremely euphonic strapped on the 2-bus--just a bit of compression--nothing squishy. Would like to make my Sequoia mix a tad more "lively".

Since you've used both the TCulture Phoenix and the STC-8, which one do you prefer for this purpose?

Thanks, in advance.

I played with this unit at AES. It was great having all those compressors in a rack together and be able to switch between them with the same program material.

Definitely a strong vintage tube vibe happening. I also was impressed with the Drawmer 1969 (Mercenary Edition). It sounded more modern but still thick and tuby and had a big punchy low end (a little "tighter" than the Phoenix).
