Tears For Fears/Shout instrumentation?

Hiya... I gotta do a backing track of Shout for someone. Mainly I'm trying to confirm what made the flute noises... pretty sure it was a Fairlight, in which case I'll find some samples.

Anyone know if Mix magazine or anyone else every published on article breaking down the track? A link would be tremendously appreciated!

thanks!

Mitchell

Classic Fairlight Shakuhachi samples. I had a pretty convincing one on my Emax (and before that the Mirage).

This link should provide you w/ some options:

I think the drums is factory sounds for Emu's Emulator II or SP12, I'm not sure about the rimshot that sounds a bit like it comes from a Linn, but it might just as well come from the EII as well.
The voice-pad sound a lot like one of the sound that came with the Fairlight.

Thanks guys... the drums aren't really an issue, I can steal the opening loop straight off the record, and most of the rest of the drums will be played live anyway.

I might just fake the shaku sound with my Triton (horrors!), depends on how close I can get it... otherwise I'll hunt down the samples (or just buy myself a Fairlight... they're worth about $12 these days, right?)

thanks for playing. the drums are linn drum samples taken from "when the levee breaks" by led zeppelin. classic demolished bitcrushed bonzo in a stairwell. note, i said samples, not a loop. the rim shot is also from the linn factory soundset, but i'm not 100% sure of that one.

Weren't those shakuhachi samples banned in the western world during the nineties? It was a United Nations resolution. I think you can only get them by smuggling them over the border nowdays.

there is a piece of software called 'nostalgia' that has many factory patches frm the fairlight.
pretty sure that patch is on there.
as for fairlights being cheap ..no ! i wish they were, then i could do some "funkless thomas dolby" style tracks, they still go for about four to five thou (uk)

i would like one .
(see my avatar)

Fairlight CMI IIx
I used to own one in the 80's. They were like $32K...8 bit...64 meg of ram.
But it had the cool light pen, page R and the infamous ARR1 sound.
On Shout I believe some of the drum sounds are from a Linn but many like the triangle were from the Fairlight. If I remember correctly the upper register of ARR1 was the "flutey/pipe" sound on Shout.

Nice avatar with Herbie Hancock. That looks like the series III Fairlight when they went 16 bit.
FWIW here is a picture of the series IIx.

Ill never forget many years ago, reading in a music mag for some sound module or sampler of the day about the included sounds:

It has plenty of strings, brass, drums, but only a sole Ahh patch (or should the be the other way around)
