Thread Starter | interested in drum mic shoot out?
Hey all! there are always people asking what is the best kick mic, or what is the best overheads, then they go and say 'well will it be good for metal?' which is so hard to answer as metal kick drums sound different for different bands. I was wondering if someone out there with a heap of mics and a very neutral pre would be interested in recording about 8-10 different drum mics in 2 different positions (in bass drum and out in front) and posting them up so everyone can pick the one they would use for different style of music. Maybe compare 421 beta52 D4 D6 M88 E602 D12 D112 Sm57 ATM25 maybe any other ones they can think of then do the same for overheads toms, snare. Just thought this would be interesting Cheers |

There will be many, many comparison clips forthcoming but it's in the coming months not days. We have a lot in the works from the guys at the Jam Room Studio next door and are about to release round 1 of pretty much everything BUT drums thus far. I think in the end it's going to be around 260 mics (from Pearl to AEA to MXL and everything in between) on every source you can think of, using the same recording chain and of course, recording human beings who are known to be imperfect from take to take. As much care as possible is being taken though. Comparison clips aren't the be all end all by any means but they can be helpful. As long as people realize their shortcomings and that they are not "gospel" ...it's another piece of the puzzle. Without being there in the room and hearing the source first it's certainly not the whole picture but I don't consider it to be a waste of time either as the comparison itself is worth something to me.
